Well after sleeping on it, I went from hating the design to liking it a lot. Its just so different from pretty much every design we've ever had in that its not sleek or symmetrical. It doesn't look like a living creature thats healthy. Even G 54 looked like what science viewed dinosaurs looked like at the time. This design looks like G 54 has cancer and keloid scars and is put together wrong and I think I'm finally starting to get it.

Found these images online. Not sure if it's fan art or concept sketch but it sure looks like the Godzilla from the poster. The second image is by Matt Frank actually.




I'm actually liking the new design from the poster. Really creepy and not what I expected. I guess if a mutated creature actually existed, this is what it would look like. Not the sleek, handsome or cute Godzilla we're use to LOL!

The first of the two pictures you posted is from comic artist Jeff Zornow. He also did interiors on Godzilla Rulers of Earth and is responsible for many of the variant covers across a number of IDW Godzilla titles.

design looks interesting. However I will agree the teaer was awful (which as others have stated is not my feeling on the film itself, just the teaser). I really hope it is not a "found footage" film.

This one time at G-Fest... someone asked Shinji Higuchi what he thought of Cloverfield. He mentioned that seeing the Hasbro figure in the dealer's room was the first time he really understood what the monster looked like. He also said that he didn't like it, but his reason was that after Blair Witch came out, he was approached to make a found footage Kaiju film.. so he didn't like Cloverfield because he should have made the movie (or something of that nature, it seemed intended as a joke).

As a one-off, I like this design for having the guts to reflect the movie's (presumed, at this point) horror tone instead of bowing to the need for an aesthetically pleasing action figure mould. More than any other Godzilla design, this one conveys a creature in agony. Where GMK presented a straight-up evil Godzilla bent on revenge, here I see a victim twisted by pain and rage. We've always been told that Godzilla was burned and changed by nuclear tests, but I've never felt that in such a visceral way as I do looking at this design, where instead of undergoing the majestic transformation we're used to seeing in recent decades, he has been deformed, radiation eating away at him until he has become a nightmarish near-parody of however his original form looked.

I've started to warm up to the design. I'll probably like it more in full and in motion. But it is quite a divergent design, more so than LegendGoji in my opinion.

As for the disappointing 30 second teaser... you know, when I think about all the teasers I've seen for Godzilla and Gamera films, most were made before there was anything presentable to be shown of the movie itself. They typically had clips of the monsters from previous films and maybe some production art for the new monsters. Keeping that in mind, at least this teaser tried to be something.

The composer doesn't surprise me. Hopefully he doesn't do that loud guitar mess he did with AoT. Everything else in that movie was great. His Evangelion scores are better though...

I've seen the upper half of the new design and if you are liking a lot of the art that's been popping up over the last 24 hours, especially Jeff Zornows, you'll be very happy with the new look. I personally think its awesome.
