Eeeh. I'm not entirely sold yet. Holding my full judgement until we see his entire body. Its obviously based on G'54 with a dash of the original prototype.

At least it is only 30 feet taller. It probably won't be too noticeable. It seems more like a middle finger to G'14 than Toho actively trying to make Godzilla look that much bigger. I was worried they were going to go really crazy and hit 500 ft or something.

The photo was twitted here:

Katokutai, a japanese rock band. I wonder if they will be part of the film soundtrack.

I like it for a one off, horror-esque take on Godzilla. I can't see this Godzilla design carrying over across multiple films like I can the G 14 design. Looks like a zombie to me.

I am curious to see how far they push the mutation aspect with this design. Apparently people who have seen the full "suit" refer to this as "Cancer Godzilla." I've heard rumors of open sores and exposed muscles/flesh.

Huh, this is a surprise. I think the design is decent and have a feeling it has the potential to really grow on me once I see the whole thing and how it's executed on screen.

My initial gut reaction is I like it better than the legendary design, but it doesn't come close (based on this solitary image so far...) to any of my favorite designs.

I think what makes me somewhat optimistic with this one is you can clearly see what tone and impact the creators are going for, and I like the direction they're headed. What I mean by that is this: it's CLEARLY heavily influenced by the original '54 design. It's rather ghastly and terrifying. I think it's pretty obvious they were trying to incorporate the mushroom-cloud-shaped head idea from the original concept art and I think they may have just pulled it off (awaiting more images/footage to be sure). And I'm kind of excited for what that might mean for the film.

Except for the original, we've never really had a truly horrific Godzilla. Something that really captures and fully embraces the genuine terror of nuclear war. I know everyone gets tired of the "grimdark" obsession that some fans seem to have (not specific to Godzilla, but just nerd fandom in general), but I don't really see this as being that cliche, trite, and adolescent infatuation. I think, if handled well, it could make for a very impactful, layered, and adult horror movie. In the very classic sense of the horror genre - along the lines of the original Frankenstein novel. It could potentially result in a film that actually delivers on the tone promised in so much of the G2014 marketing.

As much as I love me some bright, whimsical Godzilla (Ghidrah the Three Headed Monster is tied as my favorite film of the whole series), I'm totally down for a genuinely terrifying and horrific Godzilla film that captures the true nature of nuclear weapons for a modern audience in the same way the original film did in '54.

I think it's really cool to have two unique Godzillas right now.

Basically, the two main versions of Godzilla each have their own film/series. The original Godzilla is getting his due in 2016 and the Godzilla that most people think of when they think of Godzilla (the anti-hero/monster fighter) has his own series through the American films.

I also like how the designs are both different and complement their own respective versions of what Godzilla is in their universe.

Pretty cool. If I had to pick my favorite out of the two right now I'd say G 14. Shin-Godzilla feels like a very interesting one-off like Burning Godzilla but not something that I want to see featured in multiple films.

I think I'm with lhb on the design thus far. I'm down with a one-off horror Godzilla, and the concept of fleshy spongy zombie or whatever might be interesting to see ONCE.

But there is something...funny about this. I don't know if anyone else has ever read El Santo's reviews at 1000 Misspent Hours and Counting, but he talks about the 1985 design and says something to the effect of "It doesn't matter how scowly and mean you make his eyes look, if he looks fluffy and is screaming 'please pet me' everywhere except those eyes." I never really agreed with that critique of the design, but I oddly feel like it's somewhat applicable here. It seems a bit derpy, not scary.

It's hard to judge on just one shot of the head, but I'm somewhere in the middle.

The teaser on the other hand...holy cow is it BAD. REALLY bad.

I don't have a problem with a teaser, at the very least it shows off the tone of the film, and we all know that this isn't a $160m Godzilla movie.

Hmmm.....For me, the jury is still out on this one, I will have to see a clearer shot of the head and the entire body before making a final judgement. While it's definitely better than the LP design (which honestly isn't that difficult to accomplish), it does look a bit on the ugly side in this shot tbh.....but at least the dorsal fins (from what little that has been shown) look good and that they're *finally* returning to the traditional maple leaf dorsal fins as opposed to the spiky fins nonsense from the Millennium series or the lame generic triangle fins from the LP film...

I'm liking what I see, he REALLY looks like he's been through a nuclear blast. Especially the deterioration around the mouth. And those tiny eyes...lifeless eyes... like a doll's eyes... :D

The scene of the extras running is bittersweet for me, as I applied to be an extra and actually received a few emails from TOHO's casting department to appear as an extra, but they either got canceled shortly beforehand (once due to rainy weather, the other time without an explanation), and two instances where their shooting days happened to fall on days that I had go out of town for work :(

I'm really down with the redesign. It's weird and grotesque and a nice change in direction from what we've seen before. New Godzilla designs are always cool, and as someone who loves horror and has been quietly pining for a dark and nasty Godzilla film for ages, this one kinda hits the sweet spot for me. Its an unsettling design.

If those eyes were smaller and just a little bit forward they'd be nostrils. And is it me, or is Toho bent on borrowing from American designs? GINO had bony ridges instead of fins, then G2K loses the fins for plates. Legend-Goji has a smushed in face, now Shin Goji does, too. Weird parallel, or defiant statement that they can do what American studios do only better?

Don't like the design really at all. Toho has to bring it up a notch. With the 2014 movie doing fairly well here they were not going to be left behind.

Think of this, what if this is the revived G 1954 and he's either deteriorating, or maybe he's slowly regenerating???

Cheeky Meatwad comparisons aside, I actually am kinda digging the design. It certainly is shocking. The craggy Mako Shark teeth are fine, but the mouth seems to be hinged too far rearward...it will be interesting to see how the jaw articulation works in action. That and the beady little round eye...very G54-ish of course, but it just seems kind of stuck on the side of the head here...again, different angles and movement may change my opinion of that aspect of the design. I do like what we've seen of the fins so far. I hope they are large and plentiful. Also hoping the arms are not too thin and spindly...

The parts of the design that I don't really like are actually what make it shocking and scary though, so if that's what they were going for, they nailed it. Someone above used the adjective "ghastly," and I think that's a pretty good description. I'm open to anything that works in a good story, but I'm not a big horror fan, so the idea of a damaged, diseased, rotting, and gross Godzilla for shock value doesn't grab me...I think a 118.5 meter tall radioactive monster is scary enough without dripping gore and chunks of meat all over the place! That's still all just rumor, of course.

Looking forward to seeing more of the design!
