I know this is definitely an unorthodox look to Godzilla but given what they are trying to do (horror) I have to say I approve. Going for fear rather than aesthetics is a huge bonus for me.

Looks like a comical monster from a '80s Jim Henson fantasy film.

I mean, I don't want to pass judgement because it might just be a bad picture. It's certainly very awkwardly posed and framed.

...Godzilla '54 meets Nightmare Freddy? Is this going to be Five Nights at Fukushima's?

Kidding aside, it's weird, but I'm okay with it. His face does look rather squished, like it had to fit within the poster a certain way. I'm certainly eager to see more of the design.

5 things:

1) This isn't a view of the entire suit, so its hard to form a final opinion of it.

2) That said, I think he looks derpy. I do see the G54 influence, but I'm just not digging it so far. Seeing the entire design could change that.

3) I'm convinced that some people in this fandom are really ok with anything Godzilla as long as it comes from Japan. G14 is far from my favorite design, but this doesn't seem like an improvement to me.

4) Man, those teeth. Meh.

5) I'll happily eat crow if my opinion changes. I get that this is supposed to be a scary version of Godzilla, but I've always felt that G looks and works best when his design is sleek and very defined. Godzilla has an almost charming look to him, and G16 doesn't (so far, anyway). Even G85 or G2k, who are menacing, still appeal to the charm that Godzilla can have...but G16? Nope.

I don't know. Looks creepy and derpy at the same time. The way it derps gives a sock puppet vibe.

I'm just gobsmacked by this ugly mug. I mean, it's not a bad design for, say, the villain in a whimsical sort of fantasy film... but I thought this was gonna be the dark, horror Godzilla film? There's a complete tonal schism between my preconceptions and this visual. He looks funny, as in humorous. He's a Maurice Sendak monster.

And the biggest problem is that it looks like they've completely lost the Godzilla in this Godzilla design. You can take the design in various directions, but when you make him look like a lumpy rock pile with fish eyes and wild teeth?

I think I'm gonna save a boatload on toys.

EDIT: I've decided that it's the same suit used in the '54 film, and that's how the latex has deteriorated over the years.

GMK Godzilla looks downright terrible from some angles. Godzilla 2014 looked like Barney when he was first revealed. I've like the artist interpretations so far, so I'm going to hold off on too much judgement. My initial reaction was more negative though.

Well, just last night I was wishing for some news and today we get our first image of Godzilla that shows (perhaps due to an unflattering angle) perhaps the most awkward, goofy design since Son of Godzilla, along with a teaser that was pointless and cheap looking.

Moral: be careful what you wish for!

- but, looking in the bright side: I do love Son of Godzilla despite the ugly design, and you can't tell anything from a teaser like that.

Some one spotted gills? I think it and the blue highlight could be wounds or lesions, jumping off the idea that Godzilla's scale look radiation burns.

But yeah, I don't think this is a flattering image.

It looks like they wanted to use some of the original sketches and designs for Godzilla and came up with something that;s more reminiscent of the goofy looking hand puppet from G54 than the suit.

I don't think they are gills, it reminds me of the Attack on Titan designs where the sinew and muscle goes over the other textures.

There's a very mutated, even undead look to the design, and I think it works quite well. ShinGoji is looking absolutely creepy, in my opinion.

Again, a big part of the awkwardness I'm seeing is just how oddly shaped and proportioned it looks. The top of the head is weird, the neck is weird. I'm wondering if some of that is just the photo. It seems we're looking at this thing upwards and at and angle.

Look how much better the image looks cropped as the header of this news item:

It isn't how he looks that is the concerning part for me (I think we have to see the whole thing, to make a better judgement). It is Godzilla's height at 380 something feet!!!

In trying to compete with Legendary, it is really reminding me of that old Tex Avery cartoon where a cat and mouse are drinking a growth substance, to make them gigantic, and are trying to out-giant each other before they are both literally standing at the top of the world!
