NECA can't stop pumping out PR figures, and probably planned to keep doing so with PR2 in the pipeline, but can bare squeeze out Godzilla figures where as Godzilla is rampping up for a shared universe, a sequel, and a rematch of the millennium.

But the film might be delayed regardless as the filmmaker is considering making a different film first.

^hrrrmmmm...

If GDT starts planning really small scale movies that he can make when waiting for his huge blockbusters to be funded... well, considering his track record I think that's a sound strategy.

I don't trust GDT when it comes to stuff like this. I'm considering Pacific Rim 2 dead until it starts filming.

I've only seen a couple of movies by GDT, so I can't say that I am a huge fan of his. I do however, love Pacific Rim and after seeing the special features of the PR DVD, I quickly started to admire this guy's talent and vision. I was really hoping for Pacific Rim 2, but at this point I'm not really confident that it will ever get going again, I really think it's dead in the water. I do however believe that Legendary is not done with GDT, I really believe that they will make him part of their kaiju universe that they're building with Godzilla and Kong.

So whether he will direct a future Kong or Godzilla standalone movie, or even King Kong Vs Godzilla, I believe GDT will be around to bring us giant monsters :D

See as a new movie/franchise I totally get why PR wasn't an instant success. But as a movie it began to pick up steam towards the end of its run, especially in China. Now after a couple of years on the blu ray/dvd/on demand market, its basically a household name and I feel a sequel would actually be more successful since it is now a recognized brand.

So, what's the possibility of a Chinese-financed PR2? obviously the project could be modified to allow chinese and/or other asian landmarks in the movie. The Shoe must be found!

Universal releases official statement saying the film is delayed, but they're still committed to making it, trotting out the old 'we need more time to make is super awesome!' defense.

Pacific Rim 2 'off the table indefinitely' at Universal. Looks bad, but maybe a home aside from Universal?

Hey, WB: you're already in the tank for a Godzilla/King Kong cinematic universe, why not go all the way?

I when the "temporary" hold on PR2 was first announced I wondered if it had anything to do with whatever happened behind the scenes that led to Legendary packing up Kong: Skull Island and taking it to Warner Brothers. And now that cancelling PR2, at Universal anyways, is official it makes me kind of wonder again.

A King Kong movie is going to bring in a certain level of moviegoers on name recognition alone, and it's not a stretch to think that Universal executives might view the loss of a King Kong movie could be like losing the potential of another Jurassic World level box office take. It also doesn't seem a stretch to think that when Universal executives watched that potential bank roll head off to WB that it was decided Legendary needed to be taught a lesson; in this case pulling the plug on Pacific Rim 2.

Studio politics is frustrating to watch...

Hopefully, Warner Brothers decides that they would like to work with Legendary in Pacific Rim 2. I think there is a lot of great potential in the Pacific Rim universe, it would be a shame for that to be wasted.

I'd love more Pacific Rim, but the first film is a self-contained slab of awesome and there being or not being sequels can't diminish that. I'm grateful I got my Blu-Ray, my 'Art of' book, and my Gipsy Danger toy... honestly, I'd love another art book with all the preproduction art for all the kaiju and jeagers printed larger. Anyway, with over half a dozen kaiju films on the horizon that also softens the blow considerably, and Pacific Rim will always bee recognized as the beginning of this new cycle.

... I know it's small consolation, but I would like to point out that GDT directing the Fantastic Voyage remake could be really neat. He's wrung so much beautiful imagery out of (often grotesque) biology that I think a film set inside the human body could be a real visual feast.

We have the Showa era for kaiju: Godzilla, the other Honda/Tsuburaya films, Gamera, Ultraman, Daimajin, etc.

The Heisei and Millennium eras... make sense for Godzilla, but this is really one era. The pause between the two Godzilla series was only a few years long, and those years were filled with Gamera and Mothra films (as well as an American Godzilla). This era starts with The Return of Godzilla and ends with Gamera: The Brave.

Now we're in this new era, an era characterized by real, honest-to-god kaiju material being made in Hollywood as well as Japan. It's the Pacific Rim era!
