This is such awesome news! I suspected that there were going to be Monarch references in Skull Island, it was just so obvious to me that they were going to do this. I wonder if Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins will make some kind of cameo in Skull Island. That would be really nice if they did...

I'm also saddened that Pacific Rim 2 is delayed, but I'm wondering if this is intentional. Who knows, maybe they are negotiating with Guillermo Del Toro to direct King Kong Vs Godzilla instead of Pacific Rim 2. Now that would be perfect!

Alright, I was wrong. This is cool news...I mean, I'd rather see other monsters, but IF it was going to happen, seeing Godzilla and KK fight and then become allies is pretty awesome. I also figured that if this were true, Skull Island had to be a tie-in with the Godzilla Universe. References to Monarch? Yes. I really like the idea of Monarch and hope the organization is further explored in Godzilla 2.


Annnnd then we have Pacific Rim 2 getting halted, which sucks, I was looking forward to that, but I guess it could start back up again.

So, is Kong going to be radioactive like all the other monsters in Godzilla, or are they now adding in another type of monster? I thought, at least, that the origin idea behind Godzilla, the MUTO's, and future adversaries/allies, was handled well enough, but this sort of throws a spanner in the works for that world building element.

It kind of surprises me that no one's talked about a King Kong/Jurassic World crossover. I dunno if it'd be a harder sell than KKvG2, and Universal's involvement in JW could make that somewhat unlikely now, but the crossover strikes me as natural. Anyway...

On the one hand, I'm not okay with PR2 being postponed/cancelled. On the other hand, if they're gunning to tie together Skull Island and the Godzilla series, I can say this is all some bittersweet news. Del Toro is having a pretty tough year, while Kong and Godzilla's fortunes are waxing. Fingers are crossed for everyone.

All this news of King Kong/Godzilla crossover is really exciting and a dream come true for us fans. But on the other hand I really hope Legendary/WB/Universal don't get too carried away with building a kaiju universe and neglect making quality kaiju movies. This happened with Sony and Spiderman, I sure hope it doesn't happen with Kong and Godzilla.

As for crossing over with Jurassic World, I'm not against the idea. But on the other hand I don't see dinosaurs as kaiju or even monsters, I see them as animals. Godzilla and King Kong I think are more kaiju/monsters than they are animals. So I don't know how Jurassic World will fit into the kaiju universe. But hey if they can make it work somehow, why not?

I'm also sad for Pacific Rim 2, but I would love it if Del Toro would direct King Kong Vs Godzilla. He would be perfect for it and I'm sure for him it would be a dream come true.

I'm actually really encouraged that the groundwork was already laid in the Skull Island script for some time, which makes this entire thing seem more thought out.

Right now it seems like Legendary is trying to force a cinematic universe where one isn't needed, like Sony tried (and failed) to do with Amazing Spider-Man. I'd much rather see a standalone Kong prequel/reboot and standalone Godzilla sequels with Toho monsters (Mothra, Ghidorah, Rodan). And the fact that Pacific Rim 2 had been delayed (or outright cancelled) due to all this is infuriating.

^ I'd argue that this is a much more natural 'expanded universe' concept than what Sony attempted with Spider-Man. What Legendary/WB are doing isn't much different from what Toho has always done. Godzilla, Kong, and Mothra (respect!) are perfectly capable of both crossing over and carrying films on their own.

I would feel a bit better about a KING KONG VS GODZILLA: DAWN OF JUSTICE movie if they end up teaming up together in the end. The thought of Godzilla and King Kong fighting King Ghidorah (or whoever) sounds potentially very bad-ass to me. Maybe it's because I never thought of that idea when playing with Godzilla toys as a kid...

While I loved PACIFIC RIM, and was totally down for more, I'm not at all surprised they pulled the plug on the sequel.

An interesting way around the size difference issue would be something like Legion in Gamera 2, a whole tribe of Kongs hunting Godzilla en masse. It could be like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes on a city-crushing scale.

^I was thinking of Legion, too... in a different way. If the KKvG movie isn't 'vs' at all, but a team-up movie, I can see some sort of threat at different scales for Godzilla and Kong to fight, akin to the Queen Legion (which Godzilla could fight) and the solider Legion (which, maybe a bit bigger, could be fought by Kong).

I love the idea of a giant monster movie with monsters that are a wide range of sizes. The suitmation method has limited that in the past.
