Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

I can see Ultraman working out too, a helpful alien aiding humanity against another incursion by the Breach aliens. The only downside with Ultraman is that most likely Chaiyo rather than Tsuburaya Productions would be the ones benefiting from an Ultraman - Pacific Rim crossover.

Now that I think about it, besides Gamera, Kadokawa has another property that has crossover potential; Daimajin. Although using Daimajin requires expanding the Pacific Rim world to allow for mystical entities which is not an issue with potential crossovers by either Gamera or Ultraman. The Pacific Rim novelization reveals a bit more of Dr. Geiszler's drift experience and we learn that the Breach aliens have been working a very long time in their plan to colonize/conquer Earth (I think the movie touches on this). In a crossover Daimajin could have repelled an earlier attack against Japan and is reawakened in the present day by the new Breach alien threat; fights ensue, alien Kaiju are smashed, etc.

If Legendary is truly trying to connect all their giant monster properties, I have no idea how they'll do it. I'd at least like if Pac Rim remained its own entity.

Older properties I'm more okay with but Pacific Rim is basically brand new. Let it be.

I will be bummed if it means PacRim gets pushed back a few months into the following year. I was looking forward to getting two giant monster flicks with Kong and PacRim in the same year... still, that would just mean PacRim and Godzilla in '18. I'd have Guardians of the Galaxy 2 to hold me over, so that's a consolation.

If Pacific Rim didn't cost $180 million to make maybe we would of had a better chance at a sequel. The movie barely broke even.

When they said how much the movie cost I was a little shocked especially for a Del Toro production. Hellboy 1 and 2 look like $150-200 million dollar movies and the actual budgets ranged from $45-70 million.

I wonder if Pacific Rim had less time to get the movie done so it required more hands to push the movie forward. Plus ILM was responsible for what...? 100% of the visual effects for the movie? ILM is pretty damn expensive.

It really does boggle my mind the movies that succeed and the movies that fail at the box office. People love disaster porn, dinosaurs and Transformers and skipped out on Pacific Rim... I swear you have to have the right people backing your movie otherwise it hits the toilet.

This is where studio mentality is messed up. PacRim wasn't a failure because it had a soft opening...it was a success because it managed to wrangle in a good bit of money even with a soft opening caused by one of the worst ad campaigns I've ever seen for a supposed blockbuster hitting at the height of summer. I honestly believe a PacRim2 would stand a big chance of being a hit.

Oh well, life sucks, and we should never expect anything good or fun. Lesson learned.

I saw the news earlier tonight while out and about, disappointed about the stall in production of Pacific Rim 2. Hopefully this proves to be a short lived hiccup and the movie will be back on track before we know it.

I also believe that Pacific Rim has built up a lot of cultural cache. In fact I can't recall another movie (in recent memory at least) that has built up as much fan interest as Pacific Rim. There's all sorts of fan art & cosplay of course (some fantastic fan created movie posters) but the merchandising is probably the thing studio execs consider first. And Pacific Rim merchandise is still a thriving market, notably two years on and NECA is still producing new figures and Sideshow Collectibles is producing a line of statuettes. Outside of really big properties with big studio push like Star Wars and Star Trek I couldn't tell you the last time a movie or show as sustained such long term merchandise interest from the public.
