Recently watched movies!

Home - 2015 (Dreamworks) - rented this recently at the red box for my kids, but since seeing the first trailers nearly a-year-and-a-half ago, it looked mildly interesting if for no other reasons than Jim Parsons lending his voice to Oh, one of the two films' central characters. -Now recently I've been pretty disappointed in DreamWorks Offerings. Admittedly, they have tried several original Ideas since the Shrek series ended, but none of them (except How to Train Your Dragon), have remotely interested me. I still maintain that the best efforts by Dreamworks can rival that of Pixar, but lately, they haven't given me much to support that claim. I actually fell asleep on this about 45 minuets in. I decided to finish it at a later time after my kids had gone to bed, and I found the ending to be ...frankly boring. I kept waiting for the moment where I might feel a little tug at my heartstrings. Nope, nothing. Maybe because I've never been an orphan, maybe because my planet has never been taken over by incompetent aliens, who knows.

Of the 32 DreamWorks Animated films to date, I can honestly say I like 16 of them, exactly 1/2. I guess to me, it seems after hitting a good run (#19 Monsters vs. Aliens through #24 Puss in Boots) -the 8 most recent films have just been uninteresting & uninspiring with the exception of How to Train Your Dragon 2. I don't know if this is because they are focusing more on TV series adaptations, or because of the switch from alignment with Paramount, to 20th Century Fox, or some other reason. But honestly, other than the predictable sequels (Panda 3 and Dragons 3) I'd love to see DreamWorks "wow" me with something original again, something that hasn't happened in 5 years.

The Burbs - The Mrs hadnt seen this movie since she was young, and all she remembered was her parents saying "Is this what passes for comedy these days?" She liked it alright. I'm still a fan, and it seems like a family friendly horror comedies died with the 80s

True Romance - amazing film with an excellent cast and story. Loved the ending.

Had the day off, thought, 'hey, I'll be able to work through some of my pile of unwatched Blu-Rays.'

Ended up watching The 7th Voyage of Sinbad again... for like the 3rd time this year!

The Crater Lake Monster - A dreadful monster movie in the vein of Jaws, albeit with a stop-motion plesiosaur. The characters are dire, the setting dull, and the plot thoroughly uninteresting. The stock music has an accuracy rate of 20%. All the editing was handled by a sentient potato with Wolverine claws. In hindsight, I should have watched Reptilicus instead tonight. I can think of another movie with a stop-motion plesiosaur, but, uh, I'd have to watch it more privately.

Got up early and watched Porco Rosso, one of my favorite and most enjoyed films. It's a film that's incredibly rich with detail and entertainment, but at the same time is very relaxed and casual. I think some people are thrown off by that.

Robin Hood Men in Tights

I know it's blatant pandering, but the return of the medieval hangman from Blazing Saddles delighted me more than anything else in this film.

Recent movies I went to the theater for:

Terminator Genysis: this was at the cheap $2 theater, and was actually pretty good.
At least better than I thought it would be.
The only issue I had was that despite the ending of the movie, they are planning 2 more movies in this series.
Of course they accomplished that task by the during the credits scene.

Minions: I had a free ticket & was bored so I went to see this.
It was pretty cute, and I liked Scarlett Overkill (don't know why people said that Sandra Bullock was bad as her?)
Only issues were trying to figure out what the minions were saying, since their language is rather gibberish.
Maybe have subtitles, or switch to English?
Apparently there's an after credits scene, though I only watched the during credits stuff with a certain Despicable person.

Tomorrowland: again at the cheap theater, the beginning was kinda odd, but it got better as it went on.
Not too bad, but not that great either. It does kinda make you think about the future, and gives you hope.
Must say the girl that plays Athena is gonna be a cutie in a few years.

Watched two movies last night... didnt care much for either. Wild had gotten a bunch of award buzz last year.. after the feel good of watching the drama St Vincent, i'd put this in the feel bad drama category.. which isnt why i watch movies. I don't understand the award buzz either other than Reese Witherspoon was playing a different type of role than she normally does. The story doesn't work for me, it's supposed to be an emotional and physical journey, but neither feel like a journey since the movie inserts random montages in (here's an adultery montage, here's a heroin montage, here's an animal abuse montage) throughout so any growth the character is supposedly undergoing immediately stops to remind you what an unlikable person she is... so we figured we'd go with dumb comedy chaser to try and end the night on an upnote and went with A Million Ways to Die in the West, which wasn't really my cup of tea. The main character kind of omnisciently talks at anyone that will listen in something that resembles a stand up routine more than a story.. only the story breaks up the comedy... but yeh, it was kind of odd how many scenes were just the main character talking while everyone else just stands there listening and nodding approvingly.

Spaceballs - Since I watched Star Wars last week I had to watch this. This movie is just amazing. 9/10.

Hellraiser - This movie is so damn boring. There is very little in the way of character development, and what there is, makes everyone completely unlikable. The only thing that I really like in this movie are the designs to the monsters and the puzzle box. Kristen is just a boring protagonist and the movie does nothing to make me want to even try to like her. How has this series lived long enough to have like 7 sequels? Overall, I give it a 6/10. It isn't the worst horror movie I have ever watched, but I was expecting a lot more.

^ I think the cenobites and the puzzlebox resonated with the horror crowd. Pinhead also goes from just one of the gang to being the face of the franchise.

Watched The Departed again last night. Easily my favorite Scorsese flick.

Hellraiser 2 - Still not that good, but way better than the first one. The giant maze was just oozing with great atmosphere and featured a lot of gorgeous looking visuals. The plot still doesn't make a lick of any sense, but at least they gave some sort of personalities to the Cinnabites. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm cinnabites. <Drools> I'll give this one a 6.5/10.

Hellraiser 3 - Well that went downhill really quick. God this movie sucked. It was so damn boring and the acting was atrocious. Worst off though was how cheap everything looked. The video quality looked like it was filmed from some $2 camcorder. I did like some of the stuff dealing with Pinhead, but everything was so cookie cutter and predictable. Joey was just down right stupid too as was Terry. I did like the CD Cinnabite though. In the end, this pile of garbage gets a 5/10 from me. The best line of the movie was easily the scene in the church when the priest says demons aren't real and Joey shouts, "THEN WHAT IS THAT?!"

Watched PeeWee's Big Adventure for the first time since early childhood. What a weird movie, but honestly I dig it. The thing I ALWAYS remembered from this movie was the scene on the studio backlot with Ghidorah and Godzilla. Although the early fight in the bathtub somehow reminds me of War of the Gargantuas. XD.

I just watched a recent movie called Time Lapse on Netflix. It's a sci-fi suspense thriller about three people who happen upon a camera that snaps photographs of events 24 hours into the future and prints them out in the present in Polaroid form.

I'm not sure how to put my feelings for this movie into words. It's definitely interesting, and though I don't see myself ever watching it again, I don't regret checking it out. It's a compelling story but it's aggravating, mainly because the three main characters are so idiotic and the proceedings are largely propelled forward by their persistent misunderstanding of time. I do think that knowing nothing about this movie beforehand beyond the Netflix synopsis made it the best possible viewing experience for me. I won't get into plot details beyond the first half-hour or so but if the premise of this movie sounds intriguing to you, I recommend you stop reading this and check it out. I think it's worth seeing and I would love to read some other people's thoughts on it.

Hellraiser 1 is awesome. 2 is a lot of fun. 3 starts out interesting with a neat twist on the "spill blood to bring someone back" idea of the first two, but goes off the rails in the climax. 4 is a decent enough watch.

The rest are TERRIBLE.

Kain asked how Hellraiser survived as a series. The answer is imagery. Pinhead and the puzzlebox are iconic imagery and very stunning and very specific. After Hellraiser 4, Dimension/Miramax started just slapping the Hellraiser name on existing horror-movie scripts to get a few extra bucks from people who would recognize the Hellraiser name. Inferno, Hellseeker, and Deader were all unrelated horror spec scripts that were given minor rewrites to slap on the name Hellraiser, throw in a puzzlebox and get a few more dollars of income.

Hellraiser 4... Hellraiser IN SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCE - Boy did this movie suck even worse than the third one. The plot made absolutely no sense as the entire futuristic stuff was utterly pointless. The acting was so god damn horrific as if they were just casting people that walked by their studio. I did like them trying to add some new mythos to the puzzle box and the girl who is supposed to be the princess of Hell but she takes orders from Pinhead (okay?) but other than that, this movie can just go to hell. I give it a 4/10.
