The VVitch

This intense, horror period-piece got great reviews at Sundance. Now it has a distributor, a trailer, and a release date of early next year!

... and the director is now working on a new version of Nosferatu!

Yikes. That trailer is unnerving.

I've seen trailers for 3 horror movies recently that look a little bit off the beaten path:
Bite
Goodnight Mommy
and now this.

Of those three, this one looks like the most genuine attempt to make a good MOVIE and not JUST something with weird stuff and horror for the sake of experimentation. There's definitely a lot of that going on here, but it still looks like a legitimate production with real actors, whereas Bite looks to have pretty bad acting and Goodnight Mommy has a couple clichéd things right in the trailer.

There's also Crimson Peak coming, Victor Frankenstein, and we've already had The Gift, It Follows, and The Babadook...it's shaping up to be a solid time for horror, honestly.

^I love the use of old-timey typeface for the title, so I can't bring myself to just type "Witch."

I would like to see this. I wish they would put it on Amazon instant video at the same time. (They have done that with smaller movies in the past)

I haven't been keeping up with contemporary horror films at all (I haven't seen Insidious, Sinister, The Conjuring, The Purge, The Babadook, It Follows, etc.), but the trailer for The Witch caught me completely off-guard and I had to see it. It really is impeccable. It's such a well made, genuinely creepy film. The acting, especially the dialogue, is so well done and does a terrific job of transporting you to this period in time. The supernatural elements are quite subdued in favor of the terror of watching a family tear itself apart from superstition. It's much like Crimson Peak in that, if that was a story with ghosts in it, this is a story that happened to feature a witch.

I really can't recommend it enough, go see it with someone!

This was still playing near me (thankfully) and I got to see it tonight. It's good. It's perhaps not QUITE great, but if you like subdued, thoughtful horror that predicates itself more on building atmosphere and tension and claustrophobia then you'll like it.

There were at least two very delicate moments where the movie could have gone WAY wrong.
One is REALLY early in the movie, so only minor spoiler, but I'll still do the tags:

and the other is damn-near the end of the movie:

They wound up tackling these moments so well, that it sells the whole thing and really, all I was left with were some minor quibbles and a wish that perhaps they had pushed an 'is it or isn't it witchcraft' thing just a touch more to plant a bit of a seed of doubt as to whether or not the family is just straight-up crazy.

Ultimately, a really good horror film, and one I plan on revisiting around Halloween this year and possibly purchasing on Blu-ray.
