About the story for Godzilla 2, there are two things I really want but may not get:

1. A retcon of the nuke explosion. Does anyone really believe things were fine after it exploded? I think it could be written off as Ford's character hallucinating while passing in and out of consciousness. (Which might require Ford's return, but anyway...) The movie makers could also retcon it so that it did go off and did wipe out the surrounding area, but I really doubt they would.

2. An acknowledgment that if Godzilla cared about restoring nature's balance, he'd attack humanity. Godzilla's characterization is fine, and I expect the sequel won't change it, but I feel Serizawa misunderstands him. Knowing what we do about him, why should this monster alone embody the "power to restore balance" (as the remark seems to imply)? In all likelihood, this Godzilla doesn't know what humanity does to Earth. He's just out to destroy his rivals and prey. Which is probably fine for the ecosystem, but I can't see it as anything grand. I guess I just want Serizawa to explain himself, or else get told off.

Also, It'd be a nice homage to 1956 to see Rodan snacking on some MUTO eggs or baby MUTOs. Just another random thought.

I'm not seeing the problem here. We could get force of nature Godzilla AND Hero Godzilla. It's not that much different than his characterizations in Godzilla vs Gigan and Godzilla vs Hedorah and Terror of Mechagodzilla.

People in those movies clearly respect Godzilla as a dangerous creature, but ultimately root for him anyway.

If that's the angle the series continues to play consider me uninterested. Seeing that's how they look to play the Legendary series....consider me uninterested.

Godzilla 2, the last American Godzilla. lol

^ That's two weeks after Godzilla 2, not nearly as bad for its box office prospects as when X-Men: Days of Future Past opened the very next week after the first Godzilla. In these increasingly crowded summer movie seasons, would-be blockbusters tend to make more than two-thirds of their eventual domestic haul within their first two weeks of release anyway, even mega-heavyweights like Jurassic World or The Avengers.

The prospect of being able to double-feature a new Godzilla and a new Jurassic film on the big screen in the same day is one that I sincerely hope comes to be three years from now. Here's what Summer 2018 is currently set to look like:

May 4 - Avengers: Infinity War (Part One)
May 18 - The Lego Movie 2
May 25 - Star Wars Anthology: Han Solo
June 8 - Godzilla 2
June 15 - Untitled Pixar
June 22 - Jurassic 5

Um... two weeks after the last big movie (Star Wars Anthology) and two weeks before big movie (Jurassic World)?

Isn't that business as usual for the summer schedule? A two week buffer between effects heavy blockbusters?

Who cares. From a creative standpoint the franchise has more riding on the 2016 film at this point.

The 2014 was a fun novelty, but I don't need endless American sequels where they just repackage monsters and stories from the Japanese series. If this is it, so be it.

Reason “Godzilla 2” and “JW2’ will be so close together is that Legendary will probably put them in the same universe. What ever happens in G2, JW2 will be the follow-up. In Jurassic, the military will order Bryce Howard and Dr. Wu to create an even bigger Indominus Rex, one that can be controlled and to challenge the Big G. Chris Pratt’s character will of course, have none of this and begs to everyone that he can control Godzilla – all he needs is a motorcycle! To which Ken Watanabe states, no son, LET THEM FIGHT!

Well, putting all kidding aside, the curious question is why would Legendary want to compete against themselves, assuming JW2 will be a Legendary production? I''m guessing it is the studios (Warner Brothers & Universal), controlling this, but it does bring that dilemma for Legendary. Or, Legendary thinking that with the two out there, it will better compete against the Star Wars movie? Who knows?

^Personally, I think Mothra is a very smart choice for Godzilla 2. I think Mothra's appeal to women and young children, as seen in Japan, can translate to American audiences as well... if Legendary does it right. It could be a great way to expand the audience of the Godzilla franchise. Godzilla and most kaiju are, after all, pretty masculine in style and appeal.

Also, I really love Mothra, and after a few decades of maybe weaker interpretations of the character (ditto for Ghidorah) I'm hopeful to see her returned to her former glory.
