I love both films, they're among my top favorites, and while I definitely have more nostalgia for Gigan, I think Godzilla vs. Hedorah really is superior. It's more original, more ambitious, and it had the good fortune of not needing to rely on stock footage. Godzilla vs. Gigan is a wonderful comic book story but Hedorah deftly blends bizarre sci-fi with genuine horror and a whole lot of surrealism to create something truly unique. Plus, it's easily one of the most beautiful, visually impactful movies in the entire series.

Gigan for sure. The Mount Fuji fight in Hedorah just drags on and on and on and ceases to be entertaining.

I don't care much for either of these movies, but I think I'll side with Gigan this time. Even though I agree with much of what Ben says, I find that Hedorah drags fatally during the final fight. And I'm not too fond of its brand of '70s weirdness - it's not quite creepy and/or hilarious enough, so it falls a little flat. Gigan has a fun cast of characters, a decent pace, a more colorful new adversary, and better music. (I'm not necessarily talking about the stock Ifukube stuff, either - I just think the "Godzilla March" at the end tops all of Hedorah's score.)

This is a tough one. I've watched them both recently, so at least they're fresh in mind. Neither one is top 5 material for me, but both are films I can watch pretty much any time without getting bored.

GvsH has the advantage of nostalgia, since it was one of my first G-films and I watched it a million times as a kid .... But GvsG has a far more entertaining cast and a more enjoyable (IMO) score. I'd give the edge in monster action to GvsG, but I do really enjoy Nakajima's performance in GvsH....

Tough call. I'm gonna say GvsG, but only by a hair.

"Gigan" is fun, but "Hedorah" has the more distinct style, and I like a Godzilla movie that stands out by being different from what Toho usually gives us (same with GMK and GFW). So my vote goes to Smoggy.

Going to go with Gigan here. Rough pick, though. I prefer the concept of Hedorah more than I do the execution.

I think vs Hedorah is actually a better made film.

But vs Gigan wins. Easily.

And even more one sided if its the golden, GODLY, , english dub recorded by Ted Thomas and friends in Hong Kong.

FYI, I'm going to use this idea for another forum. Randomized the 30 Godzilla films.

Gotta be DAM by weight alone. The Goji suit is one of my favorites, and the screen presences of all the kaiju are fantastic (bad dubbing aside). GTTHM has a lot going for it (the first meeting of three of Toho's biggest kaiju stars), but it falls short here.

In my quest to sew division as soon as possible, I vote for Ghidorah. The monster dynamics are interesting, the human story entertaining, and overall, the film doesn't have many large weaknesses. DAM's spectacle doesn't quite make up for its flimsy human element, which drags the entire movie down, so I can't vote for it against Ghidorah.

Ghidorah. The human aspects work better. The crossover of monsters from other films feels more organic.

I've got to remember to check this thread more frequently. Glad Gigan won the last round.

This round, for me, is no contest. Ghidrah the Three Headed Monster is easily in my top three (probably top two, maybe -just maaaaaybe- my number one) personal favorite. DAM is great fun but the humans are average at best and the spectacle doesn't live up to the hype. Both movies have great monster designs and great music, but I think Ghidrah is the better in both those categories as well (you might be able to sway me in DAM with regards to the music on a good day).

I'm kinda sad to see G84 and Ghidrah both on this side of the bracket because those would likely face off in the final on my personal bracket.
