Watching Arrow, oddly enough, is making me respond to this movie more.

Arrow starts off as such a safe, simple, straightforward world where they don't even call him "Arrow" and basically nobody goes by a code name and everything is "realistic" and grounded, into a universe where there are dozens of masked people running around, the police outright acknowledging the good guys and applauding them, fear serums, code names, super soldiers, and general insanity.

Godzilla 2014 establishes a mythology, a characterization of Godzilla, a look, a feel, and a potential to go further and further out into the deep end and get really wild. I just hope they embrace that potential and run with it.

This movie is weird, I think it's fallen into the same category as things like G84' or Terror of MechaGodzilla. It's one of those films I don't mind, but I never really remember the parts I do like until I'm sitting there watching it asking myself (WHY ISN'T THIS HIGHER ON MY LIST?!) The problem really lies in the human cast. Man, I wish Ford were more engaging.

I think any attempt to make Godzilla seem more real would be a mistake. It would strip him of his mystique in the process.

Considering I remember an interview where Gareth said they thought of making Godzilla dinosaur sized in the pursuit of the realism vision, they certainly can make the character worse by fixating on realism. It's a balancing act. There are a lot of features I don't like on this Godzilla and the way that he acts that are simply justified as "well, it's more believable this way."

That's why initial sketches of Godzilla drew inspiration from Jigglypuff.

Huh, anyone have pics of this fish-zilla? My curiosity is piqued.

And I actually love the approach they took to developing the final design. I wouldn't say I love the final design they came up with. I've warmed up to it but it's still far from my favorite. But even so, I think the attitude they took towards the design process was spot on and I hope they stick with that process for all the other monsters.

A good cross-section of wildly different Godzillas from the Art of Destruction book:

You can kind of see how some aspects of a few of those designs made it into the final version. Not a bad design process actually, and because of it, I think the 2014 Godzilla seems like the most biologically sound Godzilla concept we've ever seen.

Wow, almost all of those stink. The only one I like is the one with the "Gojira" katakana behind it.

Not all of them look "chubby" as much as they look massively muscular. I agree on the T.rex comparisons, though - and I actually like that. No, Godzilla shouldn't look like just an overgrown rex, but I like the old-fashioned posture of the designs, reminiscent of a Charles Knight design, which carried into the final film design. It's a distinct - but not overpowering - dinosaurian visual.

It's always funny to see negative reactions to concept art because that's what it is - concept art. No one does a piece of art for a movie and goes, "This is it! The final design that will be in the movie 100%!" (And if they do, they're doing their job wrong). It's more like fast-tracked evolution with the best bits and pieces going to the final designs.

This is gearing more towards Pacific Rim but I really appreciate del Toro's design process -

Anybody read JD Lees' editorial in the new G-Fan?

I appreciate all he's done for the fandom, but it was totally unprofessional, delusional nonsense.
