Great news! :D I always knew Toho would announce a new film eventually, but even so, it's almost a little surreal to finally hear. I'm excited, especially if they take a little more time with it as others have said. Two years is a decent amount of time, especially if they're currently developing the script. Just stay away from the factory production line-style one year cycles this time, please Toho.

And yeah I'd still like Godzilla to be portrayed by a man in a suit, or at least a combination of suit and CG. I wouldn't be surprised if they want to maybe push the CG a bit more than just the occasional underwater shots that we've had before, but hopefully not at the expense of the traditional practical stuff.

Either way, good times! :D

Hollywood Rrporter is saying this will be a GLOBAL release http://m.hollywoodreporter.com/news/jap ... e=facebook

Special effects will be different in SOME WAY. I agree, its gotta be a decent script. Awesome news.

As much as I like Tezuka, it is time for a new director. Chances are, it will still be a combination of suit and CGI. I hope they get more creative with their practical effects though. It was such a waste that they build a robotic bust of Godzilla in Tokyo SOS only to have it used in one shot take barely did anything. I want more creative. Something like how they did the in the AOT car commercial. Oh look, the effects were done by Higuchi!

Super excited for this....although I will have to agree with most.........do NOT bring back Tezuka. lol Personally, I'd like to see Kaneko have another crack at it. Imagine what he could do with two years of development, production, and a good size budget.

Quite honestly, this took me totally by surprise.

Now the fun part begins on these boards, with the guessing games (and that is why we have these boards!). At this point, I am more concerned with story rather than special effects. If Toho is indeed giving this production time, then the f/x should be fine. What I fear most is another retread. I am not exactly in the mood to see another G-Force, or a mecha plot as a way to stop Godzilla. Perhaps set it as an island adventure like "Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster" or "Son of Godzilla". Have fun with it Toho!

I say they remake Godzilla King of the Monsters. Full on Japanese remake of an American-ized Japanese film. And I suggest Sir as reporter Steve Martin. While many might not like his acting it'd be a damn site better than most (not all) gaijin actors in the series.

I am concerned for two reasons.

1. It's not the 50s anymore. They greats of kaiju eiga are long gone. Legendary really established what the 21st century kaiju should be and I feel Toho is too antiquated to follow through.

2. They've done this before. After GINO Toho came out with a new series and it was mostly crap. They didn't do well at the box office and didn't have first rate talents attached. I just hope this doesn't interfere with Legendary sequels.

For those who thought there'd never be another Toho Godzilla film.

Gloating aside, I think it should be suitmation. I doubt Toho has the ability to give us even average-level CGI, and I'd rather see decent suits and miniatures than god-awful CG. Also, I'd like it to stand out from whatever Legendary is doing in terms of its style.
Also, I'm very much of mixed minds on this whole thing. I mean, from my own personal standpoint, it's cool. I'm perfectly content with there being multiple Godzilla series running at the same time and I am always up for more Godzilla. It also SEEMS like they're thinking it through enough in advance to not seem rushed like so many recent productions from the studio have been. On the other hand, I can't think of the last time Toho did anything Godzilla that felt like something more than just a cash-grab. It's been so long since they've done something truly great and I really do worry about the undeniable stupidity of the masses who might think this is a sequel to the Legendary film and then not turn out for the actual sequel because this will oversaturate the market and undoubtedly look cheaper (let's be honest, Toho's not gonna plunk down a $150 million budget).

Cool news, odd timing.

I completely agree about the kaiju renaissance...

Legendary Godzilla
Toho Godzilla
Pacific Rim
Jurassic Park
King Kong

There are as FEW as FIVE series we're about to see play out in some way or another. I know Jurassic Park is sort of a fringe thing, but I feel like if we can include 20-ft-tall King Kong, we can include 20-ft-tall dinosaurs. And you KNOW that NONE of the American productions are planned to be the last/only entry in these series. There are plans for at least two more Legendary Godzilla films, at least two more PacRim films, and though we don't know how many Jurassic Park/King Kong movies, I don't suspect Legendary is making either with the plan of NOT making more. And who knows with Toho? Maybe this is just a one-off anniversary type of thing, and maybe it's them signalling that they'll be filling out our non-Legendary Godzilla years with Toho Godzilla.

Honestly, when was the last time we had this many kaiju films of this much VARIETY to look forward to? Even in the years when we knew there'd be a Godzilla movie coming every year, we never had more than one other series running simultaneously. This is something the likes of which I've never experienced in my lifetime and while everything may not be as insanely wildly entertainingly amazingly fun and awesome as what the kaiju genre brought us in the 60s (and we may not be getting as BOMBARDED with new kaiju films as they were in the 60s...but would you honestly WANT to be?), this IS the first time since then that there's been this sort of enthusiasm about giant monsters on a WORLDWIDE level, and I'm going to enjoy the ride for however long it lasts.

I concur, though I see King Kong and Jurassic Park as a slightly separate thing. Either way, this has been steadily growing over the past decade. We had Cloverfield, we had Monsters. Now it's snowballed, though. With big-budget monster movies cropping up in America, you can bet that Toho and others might want to follow suit and hop on the train.

I don't think we'll EVER get a true, full-blown toku renaissance. And personally, I'm okay with that. CGI is the tool of the day. Had kaiju eiga really started in the 30s as opposed to the 50s, we'd all be saying "Stop-motion or I'll throw a big commotion". Stop-motion, suitmation, CGI, these are just tools. Quality of film, acting, story, etc is more important to me.

Well, I must admit, I never would have thought this would happen. Both high budget American Godzilla and a Toho production at the same time? Craziness. I have to admit that between my surprise and joy there's a certain amount of skepticism too. Part of me feels like it might end up being more like one of those low-budget off shoot movies you see in the bargain bin in your local Walmart. (That cheap Hercules movie comes to mind). It's an obvious cash grab, but one I'm okay with. If they really are taking their time with a good script then that gives me a lot of hope.

Shinji Higuchi needs to be involved with the SPFX. His work is both awesome and has a flair that just isn't present in the other Millennium Godzilla films.

Should use both CGI and Suitmation as easy as that.

Now, who will fight Godzilla?, considering King Ghidorah, Mothra and Rodan will appear on the next Legendary movies
