Misleading title. I thought it was gonna be based on him talking to GDT or whatnot, but it's just him speculating on what he might like to see given what happened in the first film.

I wouldn't be surprised if PR2 was officially green lit by now, it's been a month since the interview with Hunnam that article refers to.

At the very least, according the article, the work on the animated series and the graphic novels seems to continue unabated so an official announcement for the sequel can't be all that far behind.

Well let's hope so. I would think with the new Godzilla it will help people get interested in the genre again. It may never be like the 1970's again but there is still room for these movies and types of characters.

I just hope they're not planning to limit themselves to JUST a trilogy. If there can be 4, 5, 6, or 7 Pacific Rim movies, that's cool. I want 10.

Oh definitely, I'd also don't want Legendary and Del Toro to think they need to limit themselves to a confined story arc when considering movies beyond 2 & 3. They should feel free to bounce around the PR universe tell different stories taking place at different times with different characters.

EG A hypothetical Pacific-Rim 4 could be a stand alone movie and not the start of a new trilogy; perhaps featuring a younger Stacker Pentecost with the climax being the where he pilots Coyote Tango alone when fighting Onibaba. Or go with something different, maybe tell the story of the first Jaeger pilot. Lots of stories Legendary & Del Toro could tell now, and even more after the animated series and PR 2 arrive.

It's crazy to be able to look forward to actual GDT movies after all those wilderness years of The Hobbit and At the Mountains of Madness where it felt like he was working on dozens of movies that never got made.

Of course, now that he's with Legendary Pictures it feels like he finally has a sympathetic producer. I think a real out-there creative type needs a sympathetic producer to enable the making of their out-there films: a Charles Schneer to his Harryhausen, a Toshio Suzuki to his Miyazaki.

Is there gonna be kaiju in PR2? Its honestly hard to tell with that interview. I'm wondering if they're gonna go the "Mecha" route and basically make the awesome idea of a third Kiryu movie. Though, its gonna need some actual kaiju. I like Mechas, but I lean more heavily towards organic monsters.

My thinking is that there will be kaiju, but not at the outset. He does say that "the Kaijus will be very different" in the Collider interview, and has said that there'll be quite a few of them. But the stuff about the kaiju-free world might take up the first act or so of the movie. That's my hypothesis, anyway.

^I've seen a lot of articles making similar claims, but all from the same GDT quotes we've already read. I don't think the kaiju will be absent almost entirely like these articles have insinuated, but rather that they'll appear (maybe in some radically different form) later in the story, as opposed to in the first film where kaiju battles were the emphasis for the entire runtime.
