I haven't been posting or reading here since not too long after the film was released and I finally found time after many viewings to write up my thoughts. The piece includes a lot of background info that will be already known by most folks posting here, but beyond that some of my criticisms and speculations might be of interest.

You know, I always enjoyed this film, but like any fill we analyze and discuss it to death, argue over what the weaknesses are - but I have to say, as a little time goes by my opinions on the film become more and more positive. The movie is an excellent, back-to-basics monster movie with great creatures, wonderful direction, and while the characters are rather simple and to the point none of them are bad in any way (and it helps that they're played by a dream cast I'm still shocked that managed to get).

Godzilla '14 isn't just a good Godzilla movie, it's a good movie movie.

Frankly, I think we were spoiled by the trailers. The trailers were Level-10 awesome, while the picture itself was a good time at the movies, but nothing remarkable.

I watched a few of the Blu Ray special features tonight. There are a few deleted scenes and concepts hidden in the special features, some of which looked really awesome.

Also, there is a concept design of Godzilla where they specifically label "gills" and they state explicitly the skeleton at the beginning of the film is of another Godzilla...just in case anyone was still wondering.

If anyone cares, the movie has not been nominated for any Oscars this year - not Best Visual Effects, not Best Cinematography, nothing. There are many reasons to dislike the Oscars, whether this year or in general, but anyone who was rooting for Godzilla can add one to the list.

To be honest, I don't really think Godzilla deserves to be nominated. It's grown on me since I first saw it, but in the grand scheme of things it didn't do anything well enough for me to say it was the best of the year in a particular category, or well enough for me to think it should even be in the running.

Yeah, I don't see it as BEST for anything...and I love the movie. But there's no part of it that really strikes me as worthy of a nomination for anything:
Obviously we all know it wouldn't have a chance for director, actor, story, writing, etc...
And as for effects? They were good, but shouldn't they be on the budget they had? Nothing particularly impressive, honestly. I mean, there's some REALLY cool shots and scenes and moments...but nothing that's really blowing something like Apes or Interstellar out of the water.

The only thing I'd consider it for would probably be something like Sound Editing. They managed to create a really cool Godzilla roar and some of the sounds the MUTOs made (particularly when they first meet up) are really cool.

But as much as Godzilla speaks to me personally, it's one of those "more than the sum of its parts" things. If I isolate any one thing in my mind, and compare it to other movies I've seen this year I don't see a nomination.

EDIT: If I'm upset about anything, it's Andy Serkis remaining off the nominations...(which honestly, he more should have won for Gollum than anything else, but the Academy is ALWAYS a few steps behind. Scorsese finally won for one of his weaker films...)

It really should have been nominated in place of Cap or X-Men for VFX.

Yeah, I don't think it deserved any nominations, heck it's not even in my top 10 for the year.

But in a year wherein the Lego Movie gets snubbed, even if it had been worthy of something I doubt it would have made it in.

For anyone that has the Cinemax channels, Godzilla (2014) is now airing on them. I can't remember the last time a Summer Blockbuster movie was shown on pay cable/satellite channels so soon after its theatrical/home video release.

It's cropped to 1.78 though. This garbage should've ended with widescreen HDTVs, but of course no. Is it unusual for it to have hit pay cable this early? I thought some movies just bypassed pay-per-view.

Can anyone tell me if an HD wallpaper/background exists of Godzilla (2014) firing his atomic breath down the Mutos throat?
