Godzilla vs. Destoroyah

This movie is almost interesting. The setup and introduction of the characters feels grander than the films that preceded it, but then it just sorta fizzles out into the same sorta mediocre stuff. Ifukube's music for Godzilla's death is pretty, though.

I've seen 3 movies this year that I love so much I have no idea which is my favorite: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Godzilla and Snowpiercer. Then I've seen a few others I love enough that I have no idea where they fall on my rankings from like 4-9.

I've seen a LOT of crap this year, but also there have been a LOT of strong movies too.

I don't really mind that Godzilla doesn't kill Destoroyah on his own...but much like Hybrid Gojira, I find the execution of the movie REALLY sub-par.

Some of the worst characters in the entire series don't help, neither does introducing character elements only to have them serve NO purpose whatsoever.

Kid: "I spent most of my life studying Godzilla. For no reason whatsoever, considering Godzilla is real and any research into him would be useful, my college professor thought I was joking and flunked me."
G-Force: "We found your paper online. Despite devoting our lives and billions of dollars, we never realized things you apparently just knew acuz you're so smart. Come work for us."
Kid: "Like I said, I spent most of my life studying Godzilla for my own reasons. Now you're offering me a JOB to do it? No. I will not. I've devoted my life to studying Godzilla, I don't want to spend my life studying Godzilla."
G-Force: "Miki Saegusa is there. Boobs"
Kid: "MIKI SAEGUSA?!?! BOOBS!!! I'm there!"

Miki: "Hello Kid."
Kid: "Godzilla is going to meltdown at 1200 degrees. I'm never again going to show or mention that I have any interest in you whatsoever."

This is a movie that some people think is one of the BEST Godzilla movies ever...

Maybe because it is. Yeah, Destoroyah is definitely flawed and has issues, but it is still far better than anything from the late 60s, 70s, and half of the Millennium movies.

The Hunger Games 3 Part 1 of Part 2 that is Really Part 3 of Part 4 - This movie frustrated me to no end. There was absolutely no need for this story to be two freaking movies!!! Half of the movie is utterly pointless and could have been removed without sacrificing anything towards the overall plot. The worst part is, the movie just stops. Yes, we knew it was going to happen, but instead of stopping at the end of the story arc that was going on in the movie, they stopped about 15 minutes into a brand new one, which is just nothing short of bull. They did not even put a trailer after the credits so there is no reason to stay. Another issue with the movie is Peta is nothing more than a tool. He has no character of his own and is only there to serve the plot to make Katnis do stuff. Liam Hensworth's character and acting gets progressively worse as these movies continue on, so the man needs to just stop riding on his brothers fame and go do something he can actually do. The best character in the movies remains to be Woody Harrison's character, but he is hardly even around this time. On the positive side, there are some really great scenes and the use of propaganda here is phenomenal. The dialog that goes around it is hilarious and well done. It is just a shame the studio decided to Peter Jackson this book and forgot how to use a simple thing called editing. Overall, I give this movie a 6/10 because for every good thing it does, it takes two missteps that hold it back.

Still disagree. I'll take GMK, King Ghidorah, Biollante, 2000, Kiryu 1 and 2, MG93, Dest, and 84 over anything that came out after Invasion of Astro Monster. Well okay, to be fair, the 74 MG is excellent, so that one is excluded from the list.

Re-watched the first two ROM movies late last night. Still can't get through ROM1 without checking my phone compulsively. Not even Death Ghidorah* does very much for me - he has a cool design, but no personality. ROM2 starts off okay, but ultimately suffers a lot of the same issues with pacing, characters, etc. At least Dagahra is kind of interesting. Wouldn't mind seeing him again in some capacity.

* No, Toho/Sony, not "Desgidora" or whatever the subtitles keep trying to sell us. DEATH GHIDORAH. You took one of the few good things about the monster and screwed it all up.

Charade - I saw a trailer for this back in March when I went to see North by North West on the big screen so I picked it up on BD and finally watched it. It was utterly fantastic. The acting was incredible. The one liners were hysterical. The movie had excellent pacing and an intriguing story. I swear that these guys were all villains Blofeld rejected from Spectre. :lol The only part I can really fault the movie for was it was kind of predictable, but aside from that, I easily give it a 9/10. I've only seen two movies with Cary Grant now, but that man rocks. So does the girl he was with in this thing.

Dragon Ball Curse of the Blood Rubbies - A decent movie that tries to condense Goku first meeting a lot of his friends in a short time frame with a new villain behind it. It was not bad for being the very first Dragon Ball movie, as it was funny, but it seemed like some of the shots were just copied from the animation in the episodes. I'll give it a 6/10.

Dragon Ball The Sleeping Princess in Devil's Castle - Not sure why, but this one was kind of boring. The villains just weren't that interesting and the movie did not really go anywhere. Overall, I'm going to say it gets a 5/10 stars because it wasn't horrible, but it should have been much better.

If I had to choose an era, it would be Heisei all of the way.

Dragon Ball Mystical Adventure - While this movie was better than the last one, it is a mess. They just tried to cram way too much into a movie with such a short running time, and it makes little sense. Suddenly Chaozu is an emperor? The Red Ribbon Army are his minions, and he is being manipulated by Shen. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Not only that, but Goku just happens to be punched all of the way across the world into Karin's lair, who just tells him to focus, and then Goku is able to beat Tao Pai Pai. WTF? THe best part of the movie was getting to see Tao Pai Pai again even though it seemed like they just recycled all of his animation from the series but recolored him. And those kids from Dr Slump return for some reason. This movie was meh, 6 Tao Pai Pais out of 10.

Watched ROM3 last night, finishing off the trilogy. It's not too bad. Even though the best thing about it is Grand King Ghidorah, it's not like he's the only thing propping things up, unlike the villains of the previous two movies. ROM3 has pretty reasonable pacing - not flawless, but markedly improved over its predecessors. The human characters are adequate. On the other hand, the bad special effects are more distracting this time around, especially the dinosaur puppets and matte effects. It's not that the effects are necessarily worse than before, but the film has enough other things going for it that the lesser qualities stand out.

Still, ROM3 is decent. I just about prefer it to most of the Heisei Godzillas. (Not to G85, Biollante, or MGII, but possibly to Destoroyah, and almost certainly to the rest.)

Gravity - After seeing Interstellar and being enthralled (I don't know what is wrong with you guys here who didn't love it!! It's certainly not perfect, but it was still an AWESOME ride - especially in 70mm IMAX!) I've been in a very space-y film mood. I think this has been accentuated by the fact that I watched the first two POTA films not too long ago.

Anyway, my sister gave this bluray to me for my birthday a few weeks ago and I finally got around to watching it. I saw it once in the theater in 3D on the biggest screen I could get to and was blown away by the experience. It's one of the few movies I've ever seen where I really feel like you're missing out if you had the chance to see it in 3D on the big screen and skipped it. It was incredibly immersive and very powerful.

I remember some *casts a sneering glare at jellydonut* members here turning up their noses at the notion that the 3D gimmick was "necessary" and said a film should be able to stand on its own without gimmicks. And, I admit I was very curious to see how it held up on a second viewing on my much smaller (relatively speaking) tv screen and in 2D. I'm happy to say I was just as riveted. This is a great film. It's an epic disaster movie with a gripping main character who goes through hell and back in a sort of rebirth where she finds reason to keep going despite life's adversities. And the visuals are still just breathtaking. Yes, you do lose some of the immersiveness and sheer impact of the environment that really sucked you into the moment in the 3D theater showings, but the movie really does stand on its own even without that. And it really is just a beautiful film to look at.

The way I see it (and I made this same argument in the thread for this movie when it came out) is that it IS a great movie. But the 3D experience really added another level of awesomeness to the overall experience this film provided. It's much like Interstellar in that way - I first saw it in a regular theater and loved it. And I'll still love it when I watch it at home on bluray. But seeing it on 70mm IMAX was an incredible thing that really enhanced the film viewing in a way that can't be replicated by any other format.
