Your Favorite Movies

Postby alienhulk2099 » Sun Oct 05, 2014 11:54 am

I used the search feature and and only found a topic that was 5 years old and has not been posted in a very long time. So instead of necro-positng I decided to make a new one! What are your favorite movies and what would you recommend to others? Since I have so many 10/10 level favorites I had to split them up by genre.

So yes, I enjoy movies in a wide range including Hollywood blockbusters, Asylum knockoffs, obscure cult hits, silent films, Syfy originals, landmark motion pictures, and hated movies.

Halloween Resurrection? Transformers Revenge of the Fallen? The Thing 2011? Return of the Living Dead 2?

Surely, CERTAINLY, you jest.

The rest I understand complaints, but what is wrong with RotLD 2? I thought that was the only sequel people liked (although I know 3 has a cult following).

Return of the Living Dead 1 is amazing. 2 is a HUGE step-down.

I dont remember RotLD 2 being that much of a step down. In fact i thought it picked up pretty nicely as a sequel considering the ending of the first film

As much as you love swashbuckling adventure, I'm surprised the original Star Wars isn't on your list lhb.

Excluding giant monster films, these are probably my top 20 films of all time:

12 Angry Men
Fantasia
It's A wonderful Life
WALL-E
Arsenic & Old Lace
Ikiru
Animal Crackers
Castle In the Sky
Support Your Local Sheriff!
Seven Samurai
Spirited Away
Forbidden Planet*
The Philadelphia Story
The Incredibles!
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
Duck Soup
The Andromeda Strain
Toy Story 3
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Singing In the Rain

(I could probably add a dozen more here)

These are films which have truly awed me with their characters, their worlds, their design, and their overall magnificently crafted stories, which I can watch again and again and again without ever truly growing tired of them.

I'll make a topic for that, my bottom 5 include The Earth Trembles, Derailed (2005 movie with Clive Owen), Tintorera (shark movie that barely had shark action AND had massive amounts of animal cruelty AND acted like gay porn), Day of The Dead: Contagium (SO. F**KING. BORING. See Phelous's review on it for more details), and Razorteeth (acting so bad even I see it as bad). The 2002 movie Centipede! gets a special nomination from me as it is essentially a textbook example of how everything that could go wrong in a monster movie does go wrong and hard.

Some of my absolute all time favorites (not necessarily what I consider the BEST films, but ones I personally enjoy the most) that I have yet to grow tired of no matter how many times I see them (for the Godzilla movies I use the American titles because I like them, but in reality i generally like both the American and Japanese cuts pretty equally)

Star Wars (the original '77 cut ONLY!)
The Empire Strikes Back (likewise, only the 1980 cut!)
Godzilla 1985
Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster
Godzilla vs. The Thing
Batman (1989)
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Jurassic Park
Jaws
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Lawrence of Arabia
King Kong (the original, of course)
1950's American scifi/alien invasion/monster on the loose b-movies

I had trouble picking one or two specific favorites of the 50's b-movies because there's just so many of them and I tend to love them all! So I just put a generic category up there, though if pressed I'd probably gravitate towards something like Earth vs the Flying Saucers or something similar.

Looking at that list also makes me realize just how much I love early Spielberg. I mean, I always knew he was one of the greats, but seeing it listed out just really drives home how much I love his work from the late 70's to the early 90's.

And while that list is in no way complete, those are probably my absolute top, cream of the crop favorites and it gives you a pretty good idea of my sensibilities and personal taste. One thing that didn't quite make the cut were samurai movies like Seven Samurai or the Samurai Trilogy. I absolutely love these kinds of movies but I don't gravitate to them or seek them out for repeat viewings NEARLY as much as the films above. As an example, I've probably seen seven samurai 4 or 5 times. Of the movies listed out above, the only one I could even hope tom come close to giving an accurate count of my viewings would be Lawrence or Arabia and I've probably seen it 10 times or more. When it comes to the Star Wars and the Godzilla films - I shudder to think of how many times I've watched those. Easily 50 or more. I used to watch the originally trilogy once every two or three months. For YEARS. And I still watch it once or twice a year.
