I'm literally wracking my brain for any answer to that question and I've just got nothing. The closest I can come to giving a decent answer is that the T-Rex only stops its rampage through San Diego in Jurassic Park 2 once it gets its kid back, but even then, it's not like the military even tried to stop it.

define "save the day".

the scientist hero in Beast from 20,000 Fathoms figures out how to kill the monster, but he does need a sharpshooter that the military provides. Who saves the day? Same thing with the Black Scorpion, though it's the Mexican military that the provide the equipment. Similar deal with THE GIANT BEHEMOTH. the military is present, but not the actual heroes.

there's no military at all in THE BLOB, and it's kind of a giant monster.

The military could have theoretically killed the Beast From 20,000 Fathoms; there were simply much more compelling reasons not to do so via conventional means.

I'll give you Black Scorpion, I suppose, though Giant Behemoth was British.

Cloverfield. Military is shown to be pretty damned inept.

EDIT: I see it's been mentioned...but I don't think firebombing all of NYC qualifies as saving the day. The day is most definitely not SAVED.

Super 8 - Military doesn't save the day. In fact, they bumble it up until the alien just leaves.
Monsters - Military doesn't save the day. They piss the aliens off, fail to keep them within the quarantine zone, AND separate the couple just as they are beginning to realize they have feelings for each other and might belong together.
Deep Rising - it's not the military

and then you have one where the military saves the day but I can guarantee the character would much rather have had the monsters eat him: The Mist.

I think the better question is "Do any Japanese kaiju films feature Famke Jannsen?"

I see a lot of people enjoying the ineptitude of military actions in recent big movies and I think it's the wrong place to focus those emotions - if anything it should be towards the politicians who call those shots. It goes more to the source, the military (unless I'm being ignorant) is more or less following orders. I thought Pacific Rim did a really good job at twisting that around (even if the rangers were portrayed more as a resistance force than an army).

I'm not trying to say that soldiers are to blame as being inept. Often in these films they are simply out-classed, it has nothing to do with bravery. Hell, I would simply desert if someone told me to climb in a Maser Tank and blast Godzilla in hopes to only delay his advance. Yes, national leaders should be held accountable for actions that end up putting their troops in harm way. Be that against a nation state, terrorist organization, or even a giant monster. I think it's great that Pacific Rim practically opened up with this message.

What I'm getting at, is there seems to be a difference in tone in how the military is portrayed. In a lot of American Giant Monster movies (I hesitate to say majority), there seems to be an understanding that the situation is under control or will be brought under control.

In a film like Gorgo, or a Japanese Giant Monster film, there's often a sense that the situation is frankly out of control. That you can't just bomb your problems out of existence. Again, I think this has to do a lot with the different ways respective audiences have towards a major conflict. If you replace a given giant monster and say: This is actually an invading army, it should come as no surprise that countries that experienced a lot of casualties are more willing to actually show the effects and helplessness at the hands of the antagonist. I don't know if a US audience would be willing to accept a recreation of Godzilla attack on Tokyo Bay in the Return of Godzilla if it had been US troops stationed on the edge of the water getting incinerated.

I should have an opinion on that, but... four years away? I don't really care. A whole lot can happen in between this announcement and then.

No surprises in that announcement. We'll see. With any luck, he'll take some of the criticisms of the first movie to heart. Then again, he's a Hollywood screenwriter. Considering how many of them still have jobs after churning out repeated abominations, I might be hoping for too much. For now, I'm just going to sit back and wait for Frank Darabont's name to crop up in the development news.

I can't say I'm excited about Borenstein writing Godzilla 2 or the new Kong.

Edited for clarity.

I'm fine with this honestly. I think they'll improve in the sequel... Don't need too much build up on Godzilla now, but may see that a bit with the other kaiju.

I can't say I'm excited about Borenstein, but I also can't say I'm mad or anything.

Writers don't have as much to do with the final product of films as a lot of people want to lay at their feet sometimes. Remember, the same guy that wrote a Pacific Rim movie that we all LOVE wrote a Clash of the Titans movie that few people even LIKE.

Plus, as we all saw with Godzilla - he won't be the only one to have a say in the script.

Clash, Pac Rim and Godzilla all had patchwork scripts going from one person to another, so if anything I hope Godzilla 2 sticks with one or two writers working together rather than being handed around like a drunk girl at a frat party. That would at least lend to more consistency even in its flaws.
