We might have seen characters of this type before but the way they're handled and grow over the movie is so well done and full of heart I can certainly forgive it. This easily could have been a Green Lantern/ John Carter situation with a white guy hanging out with a bunch of cartoony CG aliens but Guardians thankfully surpasses those disasters by light-years.

While JOHN CARTER (of Mars) has its faults, bringing the Tharks to life is certainly not one of them.

I FINALLY had the chance to see this last night. It was pretty awesome. It's a tough choice whether I like this, Avengers, or Winter Soldier best. They're all fantastic but I need to see cap and guardians again (only seen them once each) to really solidify my opinions. Bu needless to say I enjoy all of them a whole lot.

I agree with jelly's assessment of the characters pretty much verbatim. They're almost all pretty standard archetypes, but executed extremely well. And I'm a total sucker for well executed archetypes. But I also agree that Drax was the one standout that seemed incredibly unique. At first he seemed like a typical "dumb muscle" type character. But then you find out he's not a typical dumb meathead at all. The way they handled his inability to comprehend things as anything other than completely literal felt entirely unique and was the one character that stood out as something I've never seen before. The closest thing I could equate him to is Spock. But Drax was full of character and emotion while still being totally unable to comprehend things like metaphor whereas Spock is intentionally emotionless and rid of anything but pure logic.

Drax typically is the dumb meathead, so I love movie Drax, makes him a bit more distinctive.

It's being reported that James Gunn tweeted an official home release date of DECEMBER 9th for GotG. A great early Christmas present for my family! I usually wait and buy used for cheap, but this terrific film nets an easy day one/pre-order purchase

Didn't see many movies during the summer, but this was one of them. I initially gave my thumbs up to this, but not enthusiastically. Saw it again recently to see if I missed anything. Actually, I liked it even less the second time, this the biggest money maker of the year.

Not sure if one has to be a comic book fan to really enjoy this. For me, a year ago at this time, I hadn't even heard of "Guardians of the Galaxy". The thought of a bunch of rag tags, banding together for the greater good, may be something unique to very young moviegoers, but I've seen this played out in dozens of other movies, a trend which most likely began in 1954. I guess the biggest sins for this film was that none of these characters was particularly likable (with the exaction of Groot), and even worse, I didn't find any of them particularly interesting (especially Quill). In movies of this kind, you have at least one or several characters who posses some of those elements.

Perhaps I have to see this played out, and see how these characters will grow (Groot, definitely will do that! ).

Mrs Klen7 bought us the Bluray on a whim. I was expecting to get for Christmas but I guess she didn't want to wait that long to watch it again

I've watched it 3 times, and every time I do, I start off really digging it but by the time we get through Knowhere, it's kinda wasted all that early love and I just wind up finding it to be merely a decent, fun little movie. The stuff in Knowhere just really bogs it down a LOT for me. Too much of a lengthy chase-scene combined with the already lengthy prison break and the lengthy action scene at the end (which I also enjoy less and less every time I see it, probably due to just being kinda dulled on the film by the Knowhere stuff), and the stuff with Peter and Gomora developing a budding romance is just unnecessary filler fluff.
Gills.

I think the point of Quill and Gamora's relationship (if you can call it that) was to bring out some of Gamora's humanity she lost as Thanos' adopted daughter. When she smiles at the end listening to Quill's music you know she's much better off with the Guardians.

I'm sure I'm not the first to come to this conclusion, but GotG effectively makes the horror-comedy "Slither" canon with the MCU by including the slugs in the Collection.

^ It's a bit like how stuff from other GDT films ended up in the BPRD's display cases in Hellboy I & II.
