I stole this from the reddit Godzilla group (who I assume stole it from a Godzilla facebook group) but is this not a fantastic shot of the 2014 Goji? This is probably the best angle on him. He looks a 100% like the Japanese Godzilla will an American budget here. And the gills that bug some people just look like scales here.

The beam is great. I have a lot of complaints about this film, but I still like it and I love the beam. It's distinctive, yet classic.

Thoughts:

Did the Godzilla species always have the beam? Or is that a mutation doue to modern exposure - either from the nuclear submarine or testing?

I'm sure I read somewhere that the MUTO (male?) is able to somehow shut down Godzilla's atomic breath using its "EMP" attack, that would suggest that Godzilla's species have always had the ability, and that the MUTO evolved to counter it.

Yeah, the novelization is more explicit in that the MUTOs' (both male and female) EMP attack shorts out Godzilla's (his species) ability to fire his Atomic Ray.

I believe we see that demonstrated in the movie with Godzilla attempting to fire another atomic ray and being unable too after one of the MUTOs used an EMP attack.

Did this movie have flaws and plot holes? Yes. Does that mean I didn't enjoy the movie? HELL NO! I've seen it twice at the theaters and will be getting the blu-ray as soon as it comes out. My friend who saw it with me the second time around said it best. "It made me feel six years old again." And he's right, I truly enjoyed this film because it went all out in the Japanese style of not "what if" but "why not" giant monster battles.

The "sort of EMP" could just be a side effect of the main purpose for such a development, which might be some form of magnetic confinement. There's been work done looking into hot fusion power reactions using magnetic fields; in order to produce fusion power in this way they would use the electrical conductivity of the plasma generated to contain it with these magnetic fields. Especially since the plasma is usually too hot for conventional materials to use for containment:

I feel vindicated with that "it was a Godzilla skeleton in the Phillipines" video. I maintained that it was all along, and we were just seeing a portion of the ribs. Now we know that was the intention. Yay!

EDIT: Also, I've grown a bit weary of the "what evolutionary purpose does the EMP attack serve?" question. These kinds of things just irritate me in a movie like this. This creature CAN'T exist in the first place due to the square-cube law, so who the hell CARES how it might have evolved its abilities? These are the same people asking how to make Ghidorah "realistic" because the new movie was "realistic." If you're watching a GODZILLA movie and wondering how a creature evolved its powers, you're doing something VERY wrong.

yeah, nothing says one way or another... since we never see MUTOs or Godzilla battling in prehistoric times, we don't know if their abilities are innate or part of their exposure to vast amount of radiation via either nuclear tests in the 50s (Godzilla) or feeding off a power plant/modern nuclear waste (MUTO)

So was that skeleton inside the mining pit a former Godzilla?
Or something else?

It seemed rather long & narrow to be Godzilla's ribs IMO.
So I thought it might be some kind of snake.

Just curious.

A user at TK got some images from the extras on the digital release of the movie, the 3D model render of Godzilla. Looks amazing. Take a look.

Boy, don't he look pretty. I have to say that this is the scariest rendition of Godzilla I've ever seen, even better than '64 & '84.

Dogs and cats scratch at fleas and ticks only when they're on their bodies. Godzilla actively hunts down his species' parasites.
