After a disappointing Godzilla film, the knee-jerk reaction is to once again trot out Ghidorah and Mothra. More things change, more they stay the same.

I know we do it because it gives us something to do but why not wait to actually hear what the plot is before shatting all over the movie???

I'd much rather have had them re-introduced a more obscure kaiju. Varan would have been a much more interesting choice, seeing as how while a Toho creation and part of their offical stable, he and Godzilla have NEVER faced off or even shared the same screen together, save for a blip appearance in DAM. Now THAT would be cool. Angilas gets my nostalgia nod just because he's sort of a bud of Godzilla and it would be fun to see them team up to take on a baddie. Oh well.

I am frankly sick of Mothra. Rodan gets my vote for air support, but Mothra seems to appeal to kids & it brings in the chicks (at least in Japan, according to Toho), so that's a major reason to keep throwing her in. As for Ghidorah. Well,. aside from a very visually appealing design, he is a great monster who's had as much of a chameleonesque character shift over the course of the Toho films as Godzilla himself, especially when you include Kaneko's take on him in GMK.

I'd rather they'd kept KG for the third film, if this is being planned as a trilogy, but whatever. More Godzilla is always a good thing so I will just be happy that we are getting another installment and see how this story develops over the next four (UGH!) years.

An ongoing history is important, but it can be detrimental if the character has a history of being beaten silly by Godzilla. Any sense of Ghidorah's physical prowess is pretty much gone by Godzilla vs Gigan and Godzilla vs King Ghidorah. Obviously, the new movie will go a long way in trying to restore that. Like I said, I will place money on King Ghidorah killing earth's savior, Mothra, to re-establish this.

Destroyah just has so much melodramatic value as an arch-nemesis. Born from the same weapon, killed Godzilla's son. It's trite, but it works.

So this year:

- I got to see the original 1954 Gojira, one of my all time favorite movies (not just Godzilla or Monster movies, but movies period), in theaters for the first time.

- I got to see a GOOD American reboot to Godzilla, which felt nice.

- I am going to a special screening of Rifftrax....the 1998 Tristar Godzilla film. I get to see the MST3K guys rip the 98 film to shreds...that will feel good.

- I get news that Pacific Rim 2 has been greenlit with an animated series in the works as well.

- And now I get news that Godzilla 2 will include Toho's heavy hitters Mothra, King Ghidorah, and one of my personal favorites, Rodan!

- And I also get news that there will be a King Kong reboot from Legendary Pictures as well, which only sparks my interest in a possible Godzilla/King Kong crossover (KKVsG was the first Godzilla movie I ever saw, so a remake of that would be very nostalgic for me).


It is AWESOME to be a Giant Monster Movie fan right now! I couldn't be happier!

Sorry to bust your bubble but I'm fairly convinced that there be no such crossover films as KKvG or G at Pacific Rim. Oh and by the way, EVERYBODY knows who Godzilla's archenemy is without question. KG will always hold that title. The history proves it.

While I completely understand where the frustration of reusing Mothra comes from, I'm okay with it. Keep in mind that Legendary wants to reach out the the overall movie going audience, and not just us Kaiju fans. We make up a very very small percentage of the people who actually go to these type of films with vast knowledge on the subject. I'm sure this is there way of trying to bring in the audience with names that people MIGHT know in relation with Godzilla. I'm just approaching this the way I approached the first one, this is the first time we're going to get to see these other kaiju in a big budget, hollywood production, that alone is enough to get me excited. As much as I LOVE the Toho Godzilla films, let's be honest, they have NEVER EVER made a Godzilla movie of this caliber. That doesn't mean that Legendary Godzilla > All, it just means that the production of these films can do so much more than we've already seen, and this is something we might never see again. For all we know this movie could totally bomb, which would suck, but it's always a possibility. I hope that's not the case, but again, simply for the fact that we get to see another Godzilla movie of this caliber in the next few years, I'm totally stoked. If you would've told me 10 years ago that we've be getting a big budget, blockbuster, hollywood made Godzilla film, and a movie about giant robots fighting giant kaiju, and a King Kong prequel, I would've said you were crazy. We've finally gotten to a point where Hollywood WANTS to give us good, fun kaiju flicks. So why not have fun while we can?
