On a different note: Anyone else bothered by the female MUTO being stored in Yuka? When the humans are looking for the egg, they are opening room sized storage containers. They are all on the same floor, and appear to be similar. Then they open the viewing portal and the room is destroyed. Assuming that the egg sack swas stored in that room, are we to believe that the monster explosively grew in the couple of days it took the military to go investigate?

It could be argued that maybe they had a chamber they stored her in, similar to Janjira. However, the external shots clearly show segmented chambers/rooms and there is simply not enough room in the mountain for a giant monster/egg to be stored.

Even if it was over a couple of days that she grew, how the hell did no one notice this giant growth compromising all of the safety barriers in the mountain?

Maybe we are supposed to believe she grew like Jet Jaguar as soon as she hatched?

I've really warmed up to the score.

As for the plot not being interesting, well, I loved the plot of Godzilla '14. It was pure, old-fashioned, monster-on-the-loose formula from the '50s, like THEM!, Creature From the Black Lagoon, and Rodan! The only issue I have is that Ford wasn't a very dynamic character when he wasn't doing action stuff. Fix that (and give better roles for women) and I would have very little to fault the film for. Truly an old-style monster film in modern dress.

There's an article over on the Washington Post that briefly talks about the various Godzilla's over the years in the wake of the new film:

Did they even see the movie?

They act like the military beat Godzilla and was all mucho macho chest thumping about it.

Last time I remember, some trigger happy/scared fools attacked Godzilla with civilians on the bridge.

What the reviewer said was factual.

1. Japan made Godzilla after the US Military bombed Japan with Nuclear Weapons.

2. The focus of this film is the US Military's attempt to handle the situation.

3. The US Military tries to US Nuclear Weapons to kill the monster.

If he's bothered by that, it's the reviewer's opinion. Don't just start accusing him of not getting it or not paying attention.

We've all been over this before but I have to agree with the article. Yeah, the movie works as an American Godzilla but it's still hollow in terms of themes or substance. I could see how this movie has caused Japanese fans like Shinichi Wakasa to loathe it.

It's Godzilla but just barely.

Didn't see the movie for a second time when we recorded our podcast.

I still think it's acceptable that the film is what it is (though there is a HUGE disconnect in either what the film makers thought they were making, or what they were saying they were making, and what they actually made). Like I've said before, Godzilla in America has always been the giant lizard anti-hero who fights other monsters. This new Godzilla is positioned to be just that. It's kind of wonderful. (I still think this is one of the ugliest Godzilla designs since 67).

But I can't help but get pissed off when people try and say this movie has some sort of powerful message at its heart because it doesn't. It's empty and vacuous and Godzilla himself is essentially Gamera in this movie.

And actually Wakasa did say he didn't like the film's plot or the monsters and didn't like the movie at all. I do agree that it's odd that he posts so much about it but what can you do

His post on the 23rd explicitly states this...

Here's a nice video of Godzilla himself, Haruo Nakajima, watching the new American Godzilla movie. He seemed to like it :D

Godzilla doesn't retaliate at all against the people shooting him though. It's the most neutered Godzilla that we've had since 98. He literally is running away there just happens to be a bridge in the way.

And yes...some of those other films have just as much (or little) substance at their core but they're in cannon with the original film...they build off the original Godzilla concept. You don't have to keep remaking the original film in each subsequent sequel.
