TALKBACK: Godzilla (2014) - (OBVIOUS SPOILER DISCUSSION)

Despite the first 3rd of this film taking place in Japan, Godzilla doesn't show up on Japanese soil once in this movie. I wonder how that will affect audience perception in Japan?

NATO as a force can operate anywhere in the world by invoking Article 5 of the treaty's mutual self-defense clause. The first time this clause came into effect wasn't due to the Soviet Union, but in response to the September 11th attacks against the World Trade Center and The Pentagon back in 2001. Godzilla clearly posed a significant threat to the United States back in 1954, and was clearly a potential threat to her allies, and their territories in the Pacific. Even if we take just one NATO member, let's say the United Kingdom, then the mutual self-defense clause would potentially allow NATO as a whole to cast a wide net of security operations around the globe simply due to the British Overseas Territories:



Incidentally, I did wonder how the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan would have been interpreted in a situation like this.

Conceded, but there's a difference between the NATO Multinational force deploying to Afghanistan to assist American military operations there, and "NATO" mobilizing in matter of hours in response to the destruction of a top-secret facility in Japan. Given that Janjira was depicted as a suburb of Tokyo, the United States was obviously the only NATO member that could conceivably deploy the sort of assets that the movie shows. And this leaves aside the complicated question of Japanese sovereignty, as you mentioned.

Guys, guys it's a Godzilla movie for heaven's sake. All of this background discussion amounts to nothing to most people. All we want are meaningful characters played by reliable actors with some major kick-butt monster action. Everything else is gibberish to the average Joe.

I think in 50 years, when the spectacle of seeing Godzilla roar in IMAX, the special effects, and story have been well tread by other Godzilla films: This movie is going to be remembered as boring.

Well, the movie opens in Japan in 9 days. Maybe we should open a separate thread "Godzilla" in Japan.
