Yeah, I don't think Edwards could get away with a slow burn approach for the sequel either. Replicating the first movie's approach for the sequel may hobble the sequel's box office take if it ends up frustrating moviegoers.

Perhaps the story could be approached that way, but I don't see how to accomplish that when the kaiju scenes need to be amped up over what Edwards did in this first movie. Just maybe, maybe, if there is a satisfying battle right at the beginning of the movie Edwards could have time to slowly build the plot, but that's a big maybe.

What kind alternatives would people be open to seeing in a sequel?

We can't have Herozilla killing American soldiers though. It would have to be an objectively bad military force like Russia (maybe not even them; I think Russia supplied a good 10 or 20 million to last movie's box office), North Korea, or Iran.

Sounds like a good opportunity to unleash Titanosaurus.

Lesser of two evils has been his default characterization since 1984. NO. THANKS.

Time to move on. The heroic Godzilla was a surprise I welcome.

Godzilla was his first attempt. I'm not willing to completely write him off as a screenwriter.

Directors, producers, and actors ultimately hold more sway over the way a film turns out than writers. For proof of that, just look at someone like Zak Penn, who has writing credits on X2, Avengers, Incredible Hulk, and Last Action Hero...but also X3, Elektra, Fantastic Four, and Inspector Gadget. Or Travis Beachem, who's credits include the well-loved Pacific Rim and the well-loathed Clash of the Titans remake.
Gills.

Its good to hear something about the sequel, since we haven't heard anything since opening weekend about it.

Its cool I guess they're keeping Borestein, which I guess means they really want to keep the originals(Edwards etc.). With Pacific Rim hitting in 2017, I'm assuming 2018 for G2.

I don't mind slower build up to a new monster in the film... But you gotta have MUTO amount of time for Godzilla next time... If not, G2 WILL bomb at the box office.

First time I have ventured in the Godzilla 2 thread. I've been avoiding it just because I plan on ignoring any leaked/early facts about the movie cause I don't want to have it lingering in my subconscious for another 3-4 years.

I have to say I agree with Cookson on the more Godzilla part. I think if they had 2-3 minutes more of him with more back to back action cuts instead of pulling away from it constantly, I'd be happier. Again, 2-3 minutes would of made a big difference in my mind.

I'd like to see less human characters so they can develop the ones they have. Elizabeth Olsen was performing great but I didn't really feel for her cause you barely see her in the thick of it. Maybe a minute total of her ducking in the subway and running in the FEMA camp. I feel her talents got wasted. I would LOVE less military in the sequel. More from the civilian perspective or just a scientist. I get so tired of military dialogue.

Well for the past 60 + years Godzilla has been relatively quiet just wandering around the ocean. What if some military/scientific experiment drove him mad and toward shore. Sort of like how commercial shipping traffic can stress whales out causing them to beach themselves? Or in this case it could be the side effect of a new monster driving Godzilla nuts in the beginning causing him to go on an unintentional rampage.
The military and Monarch would know this isn't typical Godzilla behavior but would be forced to try and deter him from the city. Monarch investigates what might be aggravating Godzilla and this wakes up a new kaiju. Meanwhile investigating other naturally radioactive sites they find one of the Toho kaiju they have rights to just to shoehorn a new creation and a fan favorite into this movie.
