Probably not too much higher, considering X-Men was THE most anticipated movie of the summer. Factor in that Godzilla is not as near as popular as people think he is, and we got a situation where it's not too much different than where we're at.

That's most likely true, when you get right down to it. We all re-calibrated our expectations after Opening Weekend and got some numbers that were far too optimistic.

Am I the only one that didn't think word of mouth was really that bad at all?

Listening to local radio and XM they kind of bashed it cause they felt Godzilla was barely in it. So that's where I heard some wom.

It would appear, perhaps, that Word of Mouth was indeed a bit worse than we thought.

Number one is...well, you can probably guess. :|

I wouldn't say the WOM has been bad, just lukewarm.

From the trailers people were expecting The Dark Knight and the movie was more Thor or The Incredible Hulk. Perfectly acceptable action-faire, just nothing that's must-see.

Frankly nothing this summer has been must-see, but I'd say Godzilla at least had that aura going into it. When it turned out to be "good, not great", the movie-going public decided to wait for Redbox.

It's a solid enough picture that I imagine it'll be popular to home viewers. If the next movie looks sweet then I imagine Godzilla 2 will have a much more impressive gross.

Edwards stated in an interview that he intends to use the same slow burn approach in the next film that he did in the first. I think he needs to give that a little more thought. The next film should display a much more "in your face" approach with the title character simply because he needs no build up. Godzilla is already an established character and there's absolutely no need to build suspense around him. Those elements that make what the audience is expecting to see shouldn't be held back half way through the movie.

So Godzilla just fell and fell hard from the top 15. Only pulling 69k Wednesday which is down half and even well below ASM2. Earth to echo, deliver us from evil, and something called "Tammy" helped push us out of the enumerated now playing films. They all came out a day early thanks to the holiday weekend (or is it just cuz it's the 2nd like when ID4 premiered?) While my 197.5 figure today is still attainable, I'm starting to wonder about 198.5 next week and 200 ever, much less passing WWZ in this battle box office mojo has setup.

No way I see it hitting 200m now. They took a lot of theaters away.

Dollar theaters (if that's even an appropriate description of discount theaters nowadays) might still get us there, if only just.

While I love and support the idea of a slow-burn like you described, I think Godzilla 2 could really benefit from a James Bond approach of starting with a huge action scene.
