For any skeptics, Legendary confirmed it themselves on Twitter:

I can't believe it overcame its meek domestic boxoffice. How fantastic. Bring on another apocalypse to cancel.

Nice. Pacific Rim 2 will be getting a monthlong jump on the summer just like Captain America: The Winter Soldier did this year.

I wonder if, in about 10 to 15 years, it will be normal for the summer blockbuster season to kick off at the beginning of April instead of the beginning of May like it's been since 1999.

Awesome news, not only a sequel but an animated series as well. I wonder if Legendary plans to go the DTV/OVA route or if they'll try to get a network to run the animated series.

It could be a good fit on Toonami, Cartoon Network could even make a dedicated block out of it by releasing Big O (both seasons please) and Megas XLR from their dungeons and including Sym-Bionic Titan. Although once upon a time Cartoon Network used to run stuff like this in their prime time spots before Adult Swim started consuming the network's evening slots (IE they ran the Hellboy animated movies at prime time).

That Legendary is doing an animated series for Pacific Rim makes you wonder if their movie rights for Godzilla allow them to also do an animated series based on the movie. Could be a great way to tide folks over while waiting for a sequel, perhaps Legendary could turn to Toho and take a look at some of the unmade movie ideas for inspiration.

It really is impressive to see Legendary jump right in with expanding Pacific Rim, when was the last time a live action movie garnered an animated series? Were it really the Godzilla and MIB cartoons from Sony the last ones?

PACIFIC RIM did not turn in a profit at the box office.. But I guess home video and merchandise helped. They need to cut the budget down to 150-175, and get a big name actor to give this a chance at success.

Tom Cruise and really good marketing will help.
Bring back Idris Elba as the drift Obi-Wan Kenobi.
