I don’t know. I think we are putting WAY too much emphasis on “word of mouth”, while ignoring other factors.
As much as we don’t like to admit it, there really is not an appetite for giant monster movies, at least here domestically (and I’m talking post Star Wars era). Sure, there is always one or two that seem to break through, but this is not like the superhero action flicks, which are almost guaranteed buffo box-office (and that is why for me, comparisons to say “The Dark Knight” don’t really mesh). Last year “Pacific Rim” I believe had decent WOM, but it still lost out to that Adam Sandler comedy, which always gets terrible WOM.
Secondly, even after this movie, there is still a quite a faction that considers Godzilla and Godzilla movies as nothing but a joke. Before this movie came out, I read a lot of articles and then later the reviews, where the writers once again resurrected those wrongful Japanese monster movie clichés (cardboard miniatures, tinker toy weapons, no name actors, etc).
Calculating all of those factors, I think this movie has done an amazing job in terms of box-office. It looks like it will make $200 million domestically. Frankly, I would have deemed someone crazy and ready for the nut house, had they told me a couple of months earlier that this film would make that much.
