I'm impressed with the fact Godzilla is almost at $200 million domestically. I'm thinking that might help increase the budget for the second movie if it makes them confident they can break even in the states alone. Then again I don't really understand how the movie industry thinks.

The foreign box office so far has surprised me at how low it is. I think it is going to be close at hitting the $500 million dollar mark.

I don’t know. I think we are putting WAY too much emphasis on “word of mouth”, while ignoring other factors.

As much as we don’t like to admit it, there really is not an appetite for giant monster movies, at least here domestically (and I’m talking post Star Wars era). Sure, there is always one or two that seem to break through, but this is not like the superhero action flicks, which are almost guaranteed buffo box-office (and that is why for me, comparisons to say “The Dark Knight” don’t really mesh). Last year “Pacific Rim” I believe had decent WOM, but it still lost out to that Adam Sandler comedy, which always gets terrible WOM.

Secondly, even after this movie, there is still a quite a faction that considers Godzilla and Godzilla movies as nothing but a joke. Before this movie came out, I read a lot of articles and then later the reviews, where the writers once again resurrected those wrongful Japanese monster movie clichés (cardboard miniatures, tinker toy weapons, no name actors, etc).

Calculating all of those factors, I think this movie has done an amazing job in terms of box-office. It looks like it will make $200 million domestically. Frankly, I would have deemed someone crazy and ready for the nut house, had they told me a couple of months earlier that this film would make that much.

GODZILLA took in a great 33 yuan, or 5.3m on Monday.

I agree completely on the bait and switch tactics the movie did to audiences. Anecdotally, people who talk to me about this movie usually point out that Bryan Cranston wasn't in the movie enough first, and then mention that Godzilla wasn't in it enough.

On general social media like reddit, there were a lot of people who were confused by the HALO jump sequence because they thought that they were going into the city to fight Godzilla. Narrativly that is a stupid move, so they spent a lot of time speculating on HOW these soldiers might be able to stop Godzilla. I'd be on the sidelines saying "what if there's a threat bigger than Godzilla?" "what if it's not to stop Godzilla?" Now granted, I was already up to speed on the spoilers at that point, but going into the movie I'm sure 90% of the audience was expecting a Godzilla vs. the world or a natural disaster film about Godzilla to be plot. Instead it was more of a super hero film featuring Godzilla.

Bottom line: people still have difficulty getting their heads around which Godzilla they're going to get. I don't understand the confusion after watching these films for 50+ years but I can understand the general audiences and their perspective. We as fans understand that Godzilla like any other featured "character" actor can play a good guy role or a bad guy role depending on the writers. If the ads depict a contradiction or what could be perceived as such, that's where the problem lies. For me personally, I was neither confused nor shocked by anything in the story. Every aspect was what I expected knowing that there would be more than one monster in the story even though the title was "Godzilla".

GODZILLA took in another 30m yuan on Tuesday. So, were really over 450m right now. By the end if the weekend, we should be around 480 global. The new Transformers movie comes out in China not this weekend, but the next. GODZILLA will disappear pretty quick after that, and probably won't match PACIFIC RIMs total there in China.

GODZILLA took in 25m yuan on Wednesday. GODZILLA is also accounting for 30% of early Friday sales. Next is MALEFICENT, which is at 29%. The Jolie movie is debuting in China this week. Looks like were on our way to another decent weekend in China.

It seems China has a fascination for robots.. Transformers made some real money over there.. would explain Pacific Rim's success as well.

GODZILLA took in 23m yuan on Thursday. Total gross is around 55m USD. We should get another 20-30 for the weekend putting us at 75-85 after the weekend in china. Global should be around 480 after the weekend, unless it collapses there luke it pretty much did everywhere in its second weekend.

It took in 35m yuan on Sat. Might not make more than 85m with TF4 coming out next week.
