I think a lot of the negative press that I see are just conforming to American expectations of how the Japanese will think of the movie. That is to say, the original "Godzilla is fat" shenanigans started with the 2chan post by Kotaku. Other media organizations found the article, ran with it because it's a contentious article about a popular franchise that confirms American's expectations. You can retort these claims by easily pointing out that the comments were by a couple of 2chan posters, which is hardly representative. However, American's expect the Japanese to have issue with the movie. So, media outlets looking for page clicks continuously run articles saying "Godzilla is too fat."
Anyways, not to get into the politics of media too much, I definitely believe that it's a reflection of what audiences WANT to see and hear since they chase ad revenue (which means populism sells). Whenever I see an article about the Japanese and Godzilla, considering I am not Japanese, and the article is tailored to Americans, I see it purely as confirmation of what a general reader feels like a Japanese person should feel about an American take on the monster.
Negativity sells. Pure and simple.
