First time ever that a projected total domestic gross of at least $230 or more can be considered a bomb / disaster / apocalyptic!

Honestly, there was a time I thought this was not even going to match the total domestic gross of GINO. Apparently, that is going to happen this weekend.

So it dropped. We all knew it would and expected it. It's already been said why it's not the worst thing ever and we got not one, but two sequels confirmed. Personally, I am happy that Godzilla is holding at #2. Why?

Because Adam f'n Sandler.

Him and his "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" held back Pacific Rim and Godzilla is stomping his "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" flat this year.

No matter what you guys say, a 77% drop is horrible. We'll see what type if number it gets today later on. BTW, I loved the movie, so don't put me in the hater category...this is just a fact.

We could argue until we're blue in the face about whether or not the drop off is a bad thing or why it happened...the only thing that really matters to me is that we're already getting sequels.

Why is a huge drop against X-MEN of all things surprising you mr. Cookson? I mean, THAT was pretty the big blockbuster of this summer, not Godzilla. Godzilla if anything is the surprise hit. It's still on track to make good money, and that's without opening in China yet.

Monster Zero; the only place on the internet where a huge opening weekend spells a doomed franchise. :?

Awww I'm surprised by that much of a drop. I saw it again (3rd time) this morning at 10am and the theater was pretty full if not sold out which is good for an early show.

So cute to sit near some well behave young boys and girls. I heard a few "WHOA!!!!!!!!!!" when Godzilla let out his fire breath for the first time. Nice to see that.

Godzilla still is in number 2 and has major competition. It should be fine.

If it lost out to Adam Sandler's movie then there is reason to start packing.

In all seriousness this movie did a lot better than expected, and I hate to be a broken record but it hasn't even opened up in China.

I wouldn't expect anything out of Japan though. That movie's dead over there for multiples, but in a short sentence, Pokemon XY opens a week before and those movies ALWAYS make a ton of money (no brainer).

I think the audience will watch a sequel if they explicitly show that the tone/pace of the movie will be different (less tease more show).

Everyone is very pleased with how the monsters were realized and if their complaint is that they want more monster fighting then thats an easy fix... theres name recognition with King Ghidorah, show him (or any other big name Toho monster) in various scenes in the lead up so people know that there will be a greater focus on monster fighting and go for it.

It's had the highest opening weekend out of all the blockbusters so far, and criticisms, both professional and public, seem to be in the 70/30 range, just like it seems to be with most of the fandom. I go on Tumblr and search Godzilla and see floods of "it was awesome!" and a few negative comments. Same on IMDb. Rotten Tomato's forums are kind of negative. 4chan, the den of mean-spirited criticism, seems mostly positive. I'd say the film's legacy will be much better than GINO.

And I think it's safe to say it's a success. It's made a crapload of money and it's not done with the international markets. We'll be getting our sequels.

What makes me wonder is how they're going to handle the promotion for the second one. They can't pull the same sneaky advertising, making it look like a much darker and moody film than it really was. Unless, of course, the next film DOES take a turn for the darker. But in that case, if they advertise it like that, nobody will believe it.

I also think it would behoove Legendary to cast somebody with the same type of draw as Bryan Cranston, whoever that may be.
