This is startling news. While I'll be interested to see Edwards's Star Wars movie, the idea that we've gone from, "will there be a Godzilla sequel?" through "there's going to be Godzilla sequels!" to "we have to wait HOW LONG for a Godzilla sequel?!" in the space of a week is enough to make blood start gushing from my temples. What I'm curious about is what kind of ticket sales Legendary/WB were expecting from Godzilla 2014 when they drafted their game-plan for the franchise. The idea that they always planned for Gareth Edwards to direct another movie before Godzilla 2 may have been based on more modest expectations of its performance than now appears possible. If G'14 hits the kind of figures that some are predicting, a lot of suits are going to be itchy in their pants to maintain the franchise's momentum.

Plausible or not, I think a Rodan stand-alone movie would be a logical next step. Since location shooting is the biggest production expense, a movie where you could have CG-based set-pieces taking place in the clouds could enable a relatively frugal budget. It could be framed as one pilot's obsessive search for the beast, keeping it on a lean scale while allowing for high-flying action. If Josh Trank wasn't tied to The Fantastic Four now, I would have pegged him as the perfect choice to direct.

My guess is the new enemy will be created from MUTO DNA. That'll still let them use the "instinctive enemy" bit they came up with to explain why the monsters must fight. Maybe something like Kumonga? Any time you add a giant spider to the fray it becomes scarier.

The way I understand it, Toho licenses each of their monsters individually at the same price as Godzilla, so we're probably not going to see any classic villains like King Ghidorah in the next one. Then again the Marc Cerasini novels and the current IDW comics have access to all of the monsters so who knows?

In any event, it's a long wait but lets hope its worth it.

Considering what J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies were like, I can almost guarantee that Edward's Star Wars will be much better then whatever Jar Jar Abrams comes up with.

If Zack Snyder directs a Godzilla movie I might have to commit harakiri!

Well, if Man of Steel is anything to go by, then a Zack Snyder directed Godzilla movie would have plenty of destruction in it. That at least might satisfy those that thought the G2014 didn't have enough city destruction.

While I didn't mind MOS, it really felt more like Dragonball Z. No thanks.

I actually enjoyed Man of Steel, but no, no Snyder. That's a just a step up from somone's suggestion from years past that Miachael Bay do a Godzilla movie.

So I've been mentally toying with a way for the sequel to bring in both Mothra and a villainous kaiju (King Ghidorah, Hedorah, a new beast, or whoever else).

The evil kaiju shows up to destroy everything in sight. Godzilla loses his first battle with it, but then our human hero(es) - let's say Serizawa and Graham - learn about Mothra and go to the island where she lives with her worshippers. The heroes try to convince Mothra to fight, but when Serizawa claims that Godzilla and Mothra must work together to "restore balance", he is rebuked. According to the islanders, Godzilla's killing of the MUTOs did not "restore balance." By (inadvertently) protecting humankind and causing the extinction of the MUTO species, he has protected the status quo that sees humans and their technology running rampant over the rest of the natural world - an attitude to which Mothra's worshippers are vociferously opposed. How, exactly, is the so-called 'evil' kaiju any different from the MUTOs? Furthermore, it's possible that Mothra will attack Godzilla if the two cross paths (maybe it's unclear why - because they've been competing lifeforms since ancient times? because Mothra hates Godzilla's guts?). So while the evil kaiju continues to destroy the world unopposed, Serizawa and Graham are trying to convince Mothra to team up with Godzilla.

There are obvious holes in my synopsis, but it is a basic idea.

This is just my preference with GODZILLA struggling with legs at the BO.

Since LP works with Universal now, I would love for WB and LP to add Universal to production... For what? To add a combination that surely would be Box Office gold... King Kong & Godzilla. I know, Kong was nowhere in my radar for possible Kaiju for the sequel. However, GODZILLA is not holding very well at the BO.. So changing things around for the sequel is very much needed. The style of GODZILLA will not be welcome for the sequel, thus I feel a change in Director may be needed, however, I'm willing to wait for Edwards and trust he can change. Back to the monsters.. Even though Kong and Godzilla would be the main focus, you can still add Mothra, Anguirus and some new monsters. A "Destroy All Monsters" type film is what for sure will be what's needed next to get the General Audience back for a sequel. As far as actors go, I think it would be cool to at least get back Watanabe, to explain the appearances of the kaiju.

The only reason I say add Kong is because LP and Universal have a partnership now.. So it certainly isn't impossible for LP, WB, and Universal to partner up on this.

Godzilla: Age of Monsters

More Serizawa & team in sequel. Eyepatch?!? Hells yes!!!! Simple to do, no suspension of disbelief needed to explain, a terrific fanservice easter egg and... it's just a freakin' BRILLIANT idea! Kudos!

Since Frank Darabont did some script tweaking for this film (and I'm a big fan of The Mist) why not give Edwards producer duties and let Darabont take the Director's seat? Provided we have a great script (safe bet that Darabont would polish anything put before him) it could be a terrific score for LP/WB. Imagine: a Godzilla movie with Thomas Tull's drive to honor the source material using Toho monsters, Gareth Edwards' visual sense of monster battle shot composure & story stucture all tied to Frank Darabont's handling of the human drama stuff on a level similar to his work on Green Mile & Shawshank Redemption - not to mention the horror he excelled at in The Mist? Eeek! Nerdgasm! *FAINTS*
