The Godzilla of old watching the Godzilla of now!

And yes, he DID like the movie, for those who are wondering. And in case anyone is keeping score, Ken Satsuma, Shogo Tomiyama, and Akira Takarada have come out as fans of the new film as well.

August said Satsuma was giggling with glee during the movie.

I can't believe it took some article online to remind me that the new Godzilla's movements being heavily based on bears is appropriate, because Nakajima said he heavily based his performance as Godzilla on bears.

Didn't Satsuma say that, too?

Akira Kubo in Monster Zero is awesome precisely BECAUSE he's so un-awesome. He's the unlikely hero. It works great, and it's a REALLY unique flavor that I don't know if any other Godzilla film really has at all...

...that said, if we wanna continue Godzilla vs. Monster Zero discussion, there IS a talkback thread for it, guys.

Found this on imdb in the trivia section:

"Ken Watanabe as Dr.Ishiro Serizawa in the opening scene has him dressed as special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya, who created the original Godzilla. Toho. The hat, glasses and suit jacket is how Tsuburaya dressed on a daily basis while working at Toho."

I was going to post my own review of the movie, but Skeeonk! just posted their review and it's pretty much exactly how I felt. Here is their review:

My only complaint that wasn't in the Skreeonk review (and this is really nit picky) is that I wish they would've incorporated some of the classic music somehow. Maybe towards the end of the movie when Godzilla rises from his sleep after his battle, they could've played the classic theme when he rises, roars and heads to the sea. That would've been just so awesome! But oh well.

I truly and honestly enjoyed this movie and am very happy that they chose Edwards to direct the movie. This truly IS a Godzilla movie, no arguments from me. The King of the Monsters is back and here to stay! :D

This film does have an important message. Godzilla's mission in this film is to stop a heterosexual couple from having sex in the middle of downtown SAN FRANCISCO. Godzilla is pro gay rights.

I am AOK with not hearing any Ifukube scores in this movie. I really personally dislike what has become to be known as The Godzilla Theme. Blasphemous, I know. I actually like Ifukube's Godzilla leitmotif that was heard in the 1960s. The one from Mothra vs Godzilla is still imo, the strongest outing of that theme, and I can see exactly why they reused it in Godzilla vs Gigan.

The Godzilla Theme as it's known now uses some of that, some of the Battle In Outer Space march, and then the Self Defense Forces march from the 1954 movie (which was reused in Terror of Mechagodzilla) and I see it as a frankenstein of a theme.

A score like Ifukube's would feel really out of place. I do think though, something like Sugiyama's, Oshima's, or Koroku's compositions would fit this movie more than Ifukube's.

For all the complaints about the lack of Ifukube in this movie, I'm a bit surprised no one else noticed the similarities between several parts of the score (especially near the end) and Ifukube's Ritmica Ostinata:

Probably completely coincidental but it wouldn't surprise me if it were a bit intentional. XD

Also, I think this is becoming my favorite work of Ifukube's. Seriously, listen to the whole thing.

So I've been thinking about this movie a lot lately and while I will probably hold my final judgment until I have seen it more than once, but I am having a hard time loving this movie. Don't get me wrong, I really really really really really like it, I just haven't been able to bring myself around to absolutely loving it as I did for Pacific Rim. Anyone else feel like that?
