So did the MUTOs have Godzilla Dead to rights until Ford boy blew the nest up and motherly instinct took over?

... come to think of it, I didn't think of Pacific Rim as Honda-esque, but it's theme of humanity coming together and putting others before themselves is very much in the Honda spirit.

As a slight add on to my earlier lengthy post. I did not know Garry Chalk had a small part in the opening scenes. Cool to see my two favorite interests (Godzilla & Transformers) cross over yet again 8) .
There are no more good TV Shows, only ones that haven't disappointed me yet.

Here's a really interesting essay about G'14 that compellingly refutes the "not enough focus on the human characters" narrative:
...it also suggests that while the message of G'14 may not be the same as Honda's, it's at least coming from a similar, cautionary place.

I can see where Steve Ryfle is coming from, and his review has some logic to it. However, I don't really agree with it. I think Godzilla has meant different things to different film-makers at different times. Are we to disregard movies like Invasion of Astro-Monster, Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster, and Destroy All Monsters simply because they don't echo that original political message about nuclear weapons? I wonder how he felt about GMK, where Godzilla is punishing Japan for the atrocities the Japanese committed during WWII?

So I would agree that this movie is not a particularly effective statement against nuclear weapons, despite the fact that nuclear weapons and radiation are the reason why monsters are attacking mankind. So that message is still there, though not quite as eloquent as presented in the original movie, but I don't think that's what Edwards was really trying to do. I view this movie as more of a tribute to the 1970s Godzilla, with a few elements of the original movie thrown in; it's almost like a "best of" the Godzilla series movie, if you will.

I know that a sequel is in development now, but I'll take it with a grain of salt until I see the final numbers. There's no doubt in my mind that this film will make money, but I'm a little less optimistic just because of the film's budget, AND with X-Men coming out this weekend. This was a $160 million dollar film, usually that means that we'd be expecting worldwide revenue to be around $320 million just to break even, and hopefully that's the case. But as with everything, you never know.

With that said, a sequel. While I was HOPING for this, I am a little iffy. I enjoyed this film, I really did. While it had it's obvious flaws and won't be the best film of the year, I thought that the tone they took and the direction that they went was great. Where I'm a little worried is where they'll go next. We've been introduced to a serious, darker toned, thriller-like Godzilla universe. This film had Godzilla swimming around like a shark, giving us a big "Jaws" feel to it, slowly building and teasing the anticipation for the character. Then, when we got him, WE GOT HIM!!! It was awesome. I find this kind of movie a little tough to follow up on. Redoing the whole thing won't work, we know who the monster is now, but at the same time you can't just go in the complete opposite direction as well. My worry here is that they're going to try to lighten up the film. I LOVE Godzilla and his movies, but the films that I don't like as much are some of the films from the late 60's and 70's. I don't want them going the route of the comic relief, child friends, flying Godzilla. My hope is that what we get is a Gamera Trilogy type development, where Godzilla is still the same, but as the movies go on he steadily gets more and more tired of humans and, frankly, cares less about saving them than he is about killing the other monster.

I thought the "fairies" thing was debunked awhile ago??

I also thought we had confirmation that LP had rights to 5 Toho monsters, including Godzilla. This was over at TK and I cannot remember the source, so take that with a grain of salt.

My guess would be a larval form of the MUTO and the creature from the proof-of-concept teaser that was shown at Comic-Con.

On a pure GUESS, I'm thinking we'll see it in the Art of Destruction book...
