^Heh, that's neat. I love the whole conspiracy angle, especially with the marketing. Though this curiously contradicts Watanabe's brief history lesson in the movie (he says Monarch was founded and Godzilla awakened in 1954, not 1946).

I was fine with Godzilla being heroic in the movie the first I heard about it, and the more it sits with me the more it feels like the best decision ever. It leaves it open for all types of sequels, and Jared even pointed out to me that there's no reason Godzilla can't take a "Gamera 3" turn and come back to wreck stuff up, leaving people to question his role as a savior. Afterall, in this movie he still follows the specs of "indifferent savior by consequence." But that hero's exit though. Man... when I was thinking about it today, it really kind of made me smile uncontrollably. And knowing that many parents took their kids to see this, it makes me almost choke up at the thought of them sitting in awe as their new hero marches off into the sunset. :D I love the ending.

A 4chan anon had the best summary of Godzilla's character in this movie: "This is a real bro version of Godzilla."

As much as I would have liked them to go with the "Destroyer of Worlds" angle, I'm definitely VERY happy that Godzilla is still portrayed somewhat as a hero.

Now kids will still be able to get into Godzilla, just like most of us did as children.

Excuse me, I need a minute...

Honestly, the one thing I didn't want (at all) was a superhero Godzilla.

Terror of MG and Godzilla vs Gigan are among my favorite Godzilla movies, but I was really hoping for a Godzilla 54 or 84-89 where Godzilla is more or less the bad guy. He shows up and things go 'splodey on the screen.

However, this movie completely won me over with the hero angle and there's no reason he can't become a threat later on. Like I said before, it's easy to see how the military would start attacking him in the next movie and maybe awaken something else in the process...

So, saw it last night and immediately passed out. Going to go see it again next week, most likely.

I didn't care much for the human characters outside of Wantanabe and Bryan, I feel like they could have gotten another actor to bring some more emotion to the role of Brody. Either way, though, he does a decent enough job.

I loved the MUTOs. They're interesting creatures, though I'm still unsure of what Godzilla himself eats. Does he eat radiation like the MUTOs, or does he eat fish and what not? If he does eat radiation, then I can see him coming back in another movie as more of a menace. Also, what is the evolutionary reason that the MUTOs can do EMPs?

The military was alright, though they did a lot of stupid things. Firstly, why would they follow Godzilla so closely with their ships? How do they know he won't just stop and cleave through all of them? Also, why would they start firing so close to a bridge with civilians on it?

As for Godzilla himself, I think they nailed him. The atomic breath could have been a little more blastier, but the way he acted, moved, etc, was perfect. I also love the look of him. The battle at the very end was freaking awesome. I will say he does look fat when he's walking back to the ocean though, but it was kind of endearing.

Overall, 7.0/10. Could have been a bit better, but still enjoyed the hell out of it.
Could God himself microwave a burrito so hot that not even he could eat it?

I really loved how expressive Godzilla got, and something I noticed the first time is that the male Muto, mostly due to the way his eyes are oriented, when he first sees Godzilla. The way he looks up almost makes his eyes look worried at the sight of Godzilla. I love it. The fact that these CG Kaiju all have personality is superb. That's the only worrisome thing I had about moving from suits to CG (I mean...I didn't really think this crew would produce something awful, but I didn't know it'd work this well).

Godzilla (2014) Don't Go. At Least Not Yet

Postby LoneWolfandCub » Sun May 18, 2014 1:15 am

Just saw "Godzilla" this afternoon. Bottom line, 2 out of 5 stars.

There is just too much human drama in the film and very little monster battles. This is a Godzilla film. It should have extensive footage of Godzilla destroying stuff or fighting monsters. It's a 90/10 split.

Obviously, I'm a huge Godzilla fan. As all of us are. I don't know if Edwards was just too inexperienced to direct a studio film yet or he got tunnel vision with the "plot" but he seemed to forget what Godzilla is all about.

And Ken Watanabe, Hollywood's token Japanese actor for American films, is just awful in this film. 99% of the time, he has this expression on his face of mouth slightly open, furrowed brow and amazement on his face. Like he never saw a flat screen monitor. He's like that all-through-the-film. Akira Takarada should have taken his role---at least he can act!

Just as with Godzilla 1998, I'm glad I spent the money to support it. I will probably buy the DVD because I'm a completest, but I can't recommend anyone going to see the film, not now. Wait a few weeks when the tix prices come down or when it comes out on RedBox.

Saw it again tonight. We saw it in Manhattan and the theater was a zoo. Got there 30 minutes before and there were HUGE lines for all the showings.

Audience was howling and cheering at all the rights spots. The Atomic beam, tail slap and final kill tore the roof off the place. Applause at the end too!

I noticed this time around, that shot of the MUTO flying towards Godzilla ( from the TV spot ) was cut from the final movie.
