I enjoy Jackson's film, although now I think I'd prefer the theatrical cut as opposed to the extended version. Even then I'd have to admit the movie could be further simplified, especially in the Skull Island segments. Do there have to be velociraptors in the brontosaur stampede? Could Kong have just fought two tyrannosaurs? It could go on to the human characters but I actually like how they are developed and altered from the original.
I say all this based on the last time I saw it, sometime before the first Hobbit film (which I also enjoyed). I was expecting to like it less after reading what a lot of people had to say about it, but I still found myself liking it. Not as a guilty pleasure either because I do find it genuinely well made and ultimately very moving.
It was also one of the first movies I saw (along with Hellboy) that really got me into filmmaking. I remember watching the extensive making of documentaries for both films and wanting to make my own monster movies. I still do!
