I'm going to watch this movie with an open mind tomorrow. I'm going to watch it with a critical eye on Thursday.
I for one am looking forward to some epic ranting and flame wars on both sides.
Not to be a total elitist, but I am interested on whether or not a non-Japanese studio can pull off a Japanese feeling film. Not in an "American's can't do anything right," or putting Japanese cinema on a pedestal way. Rather, these films are steeped in traditions and common tropes which have come to define the genre. Not that change is bad or anything like that, but different just the same.
I'd be totally interested in another Godzilla film that tried to emulate Honda's style, Tsuburaya's effects approach (not his effects, rather, his way of framing action since he started out as a cinematographer), and Sekizawa's writing. That era is obviously gone, I will just re-iterate that I think it's slightly tragic that we may never see a "traditional" Godzilla film again, even if these movies get aspects of the characters right. As much as I HATED this movie, that new 'Neighbors' movie had a recurring joke about "who's Batman to you." Christian Bale vs. Michael Keaton. This Godzilla, and future sequels are going to be the definitive version of the character going forward.
Snowfall, I know your a redditor, so this should be really interesting.
