I can't believe we're actually having a debate about practical effects being a drag on modern movies. Like, really?

Of all the things you could trash Nolan's films for, that's the one thing that I think is safe. It made seeing a plane free-fall hundreds of feet or a tractor trailer flipping over all the more thrilling, and they would have looked awful in CG (I honestly wished they would have done the same with the helicopter crashing in the streets of Gotham in TDK... looked hokey to me, and all I could think of was how better the helicopter pursuit scene in Terminator 2 was by comparison).

As far as urban destruction goes, there is a weird pleasure I attain from seeing the controlled, physical chaos of flying debris and crumbling architecture, something that just looks flat if it's all CG or composited. It's why the ending fight of Godzilla 2000 gets me so hard.

Don't forget GINO, and hell, even Transformers had tons of practical effects in them.

The plane scene was one of the few practical effects in TDKR that I actually really liked. And of course, that helicopter pursuit in T2 is still great. Terminator 2 has probably some of the best practical effects I've seen(like Arnold tearing off his "flesh" and showing off the robot hand).

I thought the helicopter crash in TDK looked fine. And Godzilla 2000's ending is one of my favorite endings of any Godzilla film.

I just don't think that practical is the way to go for every little thing. The aliens and spaceship in Districtt 9 still look fantastic, and they were cg on a budget of only 30 million. Of course, the film also has practical effects, but they're blended in well with the rest of the fx.

^ To Spielberg's point, I rewatched Avengers recently and there is a scene where Hulk and Thor are fighting atop the flying creature (whatever that thing is called). It was the one time in the film I really thought "that's a bad green screen." I love The Avengers, but I think you need both practical and CGI effects as you mentioned above. That being said, I'm really ok with either as long as Godzilla looks like Godzilla and acts like him as well. All the other "effects" stuff is just a preference that I could care less about if the movie is solid.

We haven't even reached the talk show circuit part of the marketing yet, where I'm sure we'll see a little more footage from the film. It's possible that parts of the Hawaii attack might get shown.
