i finally got around to watching Demeking, which i bought on a gamble. Definitely a better movie than Death Kappa, but definitely a very different type of movie. It's more of an adventure/coming of age story with a giant monster sequence. The giant monster sequence is pretty solid, but its just 10 minutes of the film. Not sure i "got" anything that happens after Kame starts writing (maybe the original manga goes into more detail) but it seemed almost like it could have been cut entirely without affecting the film. I did enjoy it so I'm sure i'll watch it again in a couple years, but certainly not a bad flick for the $5 i had paid for it.

I think TMP, WOTK, and TUC are really a best of the elements of the TOS episodes (Discovering Weird Stuff/Action Oriented Episode/Poltical Stuff)....maybe The Voyage Home if only to add the time-traveling element from TOS. Even though I don't really like TVH that much.
Wrath of Khan would be so much better had the ending NOT been spoiled for me and the dramatic moment not been undone immediately afterward.

Grown Ups 2- Typically Adam Sandler fair so if you're not a fan of his you won't like this movie. I am a fan and enjoyed it greatly one of his better flicks still not as good as older stuff (Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, etc. etc.) but enjoyable non the less.

Spider Man (2002)- After not watching this in awhile I decided to revisit the original trilogy starting with the first. Honestly it doesn't hold up that well but still has it's moments.

The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug- Finally got a chance to watching this and I really enjoyed it a lot better than the first Hobbit which I thought was a good flick. I really wish I could have watched this on the big screen. I will be going to see the third for sure.

Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo

Zatoichi meets Toshiro Mifune! The character isn't exactly the one from the movie Yojimbo. They just use 'Yojimbo' as a shorthand for Mifune's stature as the ultimate samurai film star. In truth this character kinda combines elements from several past Mifune played samurai.

Anyway, this is really an atypical Zatoichi film, because it's more like a big samurai ensemble piece rather than Ichi centric. Director Kihachi Okamoto apparently wanted to make a Japanese version of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly... since we only have Ichi and Yojimbo they needed a third character to complete the triad, and he's played by Shin Kishida! (Agent Nanbara of G v. MG!) The only negative of this movie is that maybe it's too big and sprawling and that they should have concentrated on just Shintaro Katsu's and Toshiro Mifune's interactions, because whenever they're on-screen together it's a delight.

It was alright. I didn't really like the designs of the Watchers though.

The Devil's Advocate - This movie has always been a pleasure to watch. It has a great build up and all of the super natural elements are done in such a low key manner that when they do occur, it makes it special and exciting every time. Not to mention Pacino is just flat out having fun with Milton. Keanu's acting is wooden, but that is the way his character is supposed to be, so he fits the bill. I also love the living frieze at the end of the movie as it is one of the most visually amazing pieces in movie history. Overall, I give the movie a 7/10.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier - could have used more Winter Soldier especially since that's the name of the film. But good.

Batman Forever - an mst3k-style live showing at the Alamo Drafthouse. Tons of fun, I wish I'd been able to go to one of these sooner.

The Hobbit: I Wish it Was Pronounced "Smog" - [fart noise]

and some Godzilla movies.

How is his name supposed to be pronounced? It looks like it would be pronounced Smog and there is all I have ever heard it as.

Amadeus - We just got back from seeing this at the Drafthouse and the movie is incredible. I've only seen it once before (the day I got it on BD) and I do not know why I haven't watched it more often. The story is interesting and well thought out. The characters are great. Seeing Salieri's jealousy is both dramatic and comic gold when it needs to be. Not to mention the music and visuals are just amazing. My favorite scene of the movie is the opera scene after Mozart's father had just died. The costumes and everything around it were just down right gorgeous. I give this movie a 9/10.

I just finished watching the HBO series "True Detective"... wow. Genuinely the most disturbing, entrancing, horrific, captivating thing i have seen in a long time. The writing is taut and i would it put it next to Breaking Bad's final seasons in quality. The series is dark and the subject matter is one that would usually cause me to stop watching. It's a thriller/buddy cop/drama/horror/mystery/occult film spread over 8 hours of high production television with great acting.
Part of me wants them to quit while they are ahead, but it sounds like Season 2 will be a self contained story separate from the characters and events of Season 1, so I'm willing to see whats next... but if its half as dark as Season 1, i will have to take the same strategy of keeping a new episode of Archer queued up as a chaser before bed.

Looper: I remember not being the least bit interested in this movie when it first came out, but some friends said it was pretty good. After finally watching it, yeah, no, this movie was quite lackluster. It's biggest problem is that it was just flat out uninteresting. The characters were boring. The concept was a great idea but executed in such a bland manner that I just did not give a damn about the whole thing. In fact, I would have rathered seen the movie flesh out the 30 years before he went back in time over watching a terrible mother and son movie. The movie was predictable right from the get go whereas they should have actually done something to develop Sid's future instead of just throw it in there in the last 5 minutes. Overall, I give this thing a 4/10 because there was some cool things in it.

Gigi (1958)

Delightful old Hollywood movie set in that wonderful version of turn-of-the-century Paris that only exists in movies and Pepe Le Pew cartoons... and speaking of that: this was the comeback film of Maurice Chevalier, the inspiration for Pepe! The charming Leslie Caron stars as Gigi, and she's just about the prettiest human being ever.

Saw The Raid and The Raid 2, and I must say I loved both! There were a few plot holes in both, but the second one definitely made a lot more sense to the first one and the story was much better in the second one I felt.

Transcendence - When it comes down to the core concepts of this movie, the movie sounds extremely interesting and unique. A dying man's brain is uploaded into a computer and he creates technological wonders with it that can also become nightmarish echoes of the future. What we actually got was a movie with a paper plot so thin, you could just watch the two minute trailer and you would be left more satisfied than when the credits start rolling. This movie is just so god damned boring that is it not even worth wasting your time seeing even once. Like I just said, go watch the trailer instead. Johnny Depp sounds like he was bored while Rebecca Hall's facial expressions never seemed to match with what was going on on screen. Perhaps Depp should retire from acting as he is racing down the slide that leads into a pile of crap at rapid speeds while he still has some dignity left to his name. Overall, do not waste your time with this dull monotone called a movie as it never feels like it is going to end because there is no such thing as a climax within it. Go watch something better instead like "The World's End" or "The Matrix" if you want to see something that deals with machines and the end of the world. I give this movie a 2/10 and that is because of its concept.

Airplane - After the disappointment that was Transcendzzz, my friends made me watch this movie and it was actually quite good. It isn't the best comedy I have ever seen from a plot point of view, but it was down right hilarious nonetheless. I think the Autopilot stuff is the best part of the movie along with the two black dudes. Oh, and the opening bit with the plane and the Jaws music was priceless. Overall, I give it a 7/10.

Family Plot - After a long hiatus, we have finally watched another of the Hitchcock movies from the collection, but man, this makes the third movie in a row that I am a little bit disappointed in. It was fun, but it seemed to lack something that his previous movies had. I'd put it on the same level as Marnie though and not Saboteur, so it is definitely not close to being my least favorite, but still, for his final movie, I expected more. I give it a 7/10.
