All this talk about censorship and the tsunami stuff is utter nonsense. People are overly sensitive about everything. At what point is it appropriate to make any movie which references any actual tragic event? WWII killed millions but now we have video games which let you play American soldier and go "pew pew" for funzies. Just because 10 years or 50 have passed does not change what happened in history. If it's not ok to be "insensitive" right after, what changes years or months after? Nothing.

People need to stop being so ridiculous. Everyone wants to be offended over something and frankly need to chill out.

I'm not advocating censoring the movie, I'm just saying that people finding it insensitive is a valid complaint, and something that will needed to be treated with respect. Glossing over a natural disaster with a 'get over it' attitude really is the reason people would be upset about it in the first place.

It's not hypocrisy. If you legitimately had to run for you life after an earthquake and tsunami that killed members of your family, and then were forced to wait on roof tops until you could be evacuated, do you think you'd want to see this movie, see television bumps, or watch the trailers, or would this bring up memories of the event?

Would these emotional wounds be two fresh?

Like I said 15,000+ people died in an advanced nation. The only reason the death toll wasn't higher was because of proper evacuation procedures in the event of an Earthquake and building codes. Entire towns were wiped off the map, and as the article mentions, there are still people living in temporary housing 3 years later.

Again, this is not whether or not this makes YOU upset. This doesn't make ME upset, but I can understand why it could make survivors of the Tohoku earthquake upset, and by extension, I can understand why a Japanese director would shy away from that material.

I think the difference when it comes to a war movie, is that you are approaching it for a historical perspective, with the intention of showing acts of heroism. It's the same reason Hollywood made United 93 and World Trade Center. You also through in the national pride aspect for both.

I will say it again, when it comes to when it's 'okay' to use those images without being criticized, really comes down to how long time has passed for the event. If it's very much still real for a large population, then you are going to get backlash. If people have rebuilt their lives and are ready to reflect, that's a different story.

Gojira came out 9 years after the end of WW II. I have no idea how many people were upset with the imagery, but they made the monster as a pure stand end for the bomb. In the 1960s, Tsuburaya created a vampire monster that looked liked victims of Hiroshima complete with Keloid scars, and that was obviously not okay. It's actually banned in Japan for that reason. This is not a commentary on whether or not that it's okay to ban an artistic expression, rather, I'm using it to illustrate my point on what's okay to commercialize after the event.

There is a saying that South Park said once regarding offending certain people with television programming and went along like this...

"Either it's all okay or none of it is okay."'

Even though that phrase is used a little too loosely cause there are probably things that shouldn't have a voice.

We all have our "things" whether it be a simple has a swear word to as big as being a survivor of a national tragedy/disaster. The only thing that sucks as Jorzilla pointed out is some of these things are unavoidable for people just trying to watch some primetime TV and something brings back repressed memories.

Hey, I don't watch football anymore cause they let Michael Vick back into football after body slamming, choking and hanging dogs OR Dante Stallworth killing a pedestrian driving DUI and aside from a light sentencing and removal of his licence and 1 year of unpaid suspension, he is back playing football after the fact. So I don't watch football. See? That's my thing. However I'm not calling for the removal of the NFL. However I can't really compare my "thing" with someone who lost their family in a disaster. It just hits me emotionally as trivial as it is.

Anywho, I'm tired and constipated with dry turds. Good night.

Like I said, I'm not advocating for the film being banned or censored in Japan, I'm just pointing out that it is valid for someone to make commentary on it, or state that a Japanese film maker would shy away from those elements.

So I guess a guy who was bitten and lost an arm because of a rattlesnake should campaign against a Syfy original movie that features a giant, man-eating rattlesnake? Right?

Logic failure.

Sometimes movies are a way of coping with such things. Why do you think they made all those 9/11 movies?

If people are too sensitive to certain imagery, well then, they should stay away. I dont think movies should be changed or censored because some people have trouble dealing with certain subjects.

Here's an idea... if you don't want to watch the movie, don't watch it. It's not like people in Japan are going to be forced into theaters and their eyes held open. People can complain about being offended and many have a right to be, but it is their choice to watch this movie or not. Simple.

These are the very things Godzilla and other kaiju were created to represent. Japan always turned elements of the world around them into gods and monsters with their own personalities and unique attributes. A nation with a history of natural disasters, two nuclear bombings - the kaiju were the new anthropomorphic personifications of these things. In 1954 many Japanese were upset with Gojira. While the film was a financial success the controversy over the subject mater didn't help it critically, and it took some time for it to reappraised and become enshrined as a classic film.

So... I'm just going to assume there's nothing left to talk about right now and some people need to get away from the computer to alleviate their boredom. Seriously, this is starting to look like TK.
