My apologies if this has already been posted and discussed, but Gareth Edwards says in this interview that the film is not a sequel to the 1954 original, that it is a stand alone movie inspired by the original.

I was wondering when he would be on Letterman. I would be surprised if there is footage but not if he at least mentions Godzilla during the interview.
