Some of my most frustrating experiences working as a creative person has been helping other creative people who are in a rut—usually emotionally—realize that art
isn't completely subjective.
Take a person who prefers a Big Mac to a filet mignon. Chalk it up to taste—he prefers the indulgence of fast food. But he cannot legitimately argue that meat by-product scraped off the wall of a processing plant and formed into what resembles a ground beef patty is in any way
better than a select cut of meat cooked with meticulous attention. There is always wiggle room for taste, but subjectivity only goes so far.
[EDIT: But if the Big Mac is flavorful and the filet mignon is cooked improperly, then the Big Mac is technically better in that case. i.e., a "stupid" movie can be better than an serious one. Art isn't subjective, but it isn't black-and-white, either.
