This is always tough. I know the next time I look at this a few will swap around. But I've tried to do this as fairly as possible. The only ones I truly dislike are GINO and Final Wars.

i have ranked each of the eras seperately, but i've never pulled the whole franchise into list... they are just so different that it's almost like comparing apples and oranges

Like....I find it really easy to rank the TOP favorites, and the bottom rung stuff.
The middle becomes really difficult and shifts depending on mood (things like Terror of MechaGodzilla/Godzilla 1984/Final Wars shift)

I have a pretty clear concept of which are my top 10, but within that list I really can't make any kind of definitive order, so I always just list them chronologically. What possible way is there to directly compare King Kong vs. Godzilla with Godzilla vs. Biollante? And, likewise, I have a bottom 4, and of those, all I can really say is, "I enjoy a little more than the other three."

But any comprehensive ranking I do is mostly gonna be, "within each of these broad levels of quality, which ones am I most in the mood to watch right now?"

I notice a lot of us tend to view these movies between long intervals. It's a large film series, so it makes sense the grand majority of us wouldn't re-watch all of them every other month. Even looking back at my recent list I see some things I would reorganize after viewing some titles recently. Destroy All Monsters, for example, would probably be bumped down several notches-- but even then it's hard to be too specific.

I try to watch the entirety of the series once or twice a year (2013 was just once, with repeat viewings of favorites here and there because these movies tend to improve my mood instantly once I pop them in the DVD player). I usually only rank them if a new thread pops up, although I'm keeping track of my rankings on this run through because I'm interested to see where the new film will fall.

Having recently gone through the entire series (I need to get on those talkback threads), here's my updated ranking:
1.) Mothra vs. Godzilla
2.) Gojira
3.) Godzilla vs. Biollante
4.) Godzilla vs. Monster Zero
^FIRM. Not much interchangeability. I absolutely unabashedly adore each of these films.
5.) Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster
6.) Godzilla vs. Gigan
7.) Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla
8.) Son of Godzilla
9.) Godzilla 2000
^Semi-firm. Some interchangeability applicable. I love these movies though.
10.) Ghidrah, the Three-Headed Monster
11.) Godzilla x Mechagodzilla
12.) King Kong vs. Godzilla
13.) GMK
14.) Terror of Mechagodzilla
15.) Godzilla Final Wars
16.) Godzilla 1985
^There's some name-outta-the-hat type stuff going on here. Maybe I like '85 a little better than GMK or ToMG the best of these, but these change depending on mood. I genuinely like all of these movies though.
17.) Godzilla Tokyo SOS
18.) Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
19.) Destroy All Monsters
20.) Godzilla vs. Megalon
21.) Godzilla's Revenge
^Pretty interchangeable. I like parts of all these, but something about each one holds it back and keeps me from really liking the movie as a whole.
22.) Godzilla vs Megaguirus
23.) Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla
24.) Godzilla Raids Again
25.) Godzilla vs. Hedorah
26.) Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
27.) Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II

^Fairly firm, actually. These are the films which I don't revisit often, and have no desire to either. I don't like these, even if I might like an individual part here or there. Megaguirus might be the lone outlier in that revisitation idea, as it's jumped up my list fairly significantly, but yeah, these are the films I honestly could go without and still be perfectly happy with the other 20 films.

I know it's a bit silly to be doing a ranking so close to the new film, but I probably won't really want to give that one a firm ranking on a list for a few years, to let it settle in and see where it falls in a non-knee-jerk reaction way.

So I did a comparison of my most recent ranked list to the list I originally posted 7 years ago. I did a color gradient on how my tastes changed, and made some interesting observations.

Regardless of current rankings, here's how my tastes changed over the last 7 years.

Movies that improved A LOT:
Invasion of Astro-Monster (Godzilla vs. Monster Zero) [1965]
Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster [1964]
Destroy All Monsters [1968]
Godzilla Raids Again [1955]

Observation: I Was selling the Golden Age films short.

Movies that moderately improved:
Ebirah, Horror of the Deep (Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster) [1966]
Godzilla vs. Megalon [1973]
Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. [2003]
King Kong vs. Godzilla [1962]

Observation: Jun Fukuda isn't that bad, King Kong vs. Godzilla is a decent film, and Tezuka just might be under-sold.

Movies that stayed nearly the same:
Godzilla vs. Biollante [1989]
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2 [1993]
Godzilla vs. Gigan [1972]
Son of Godzilla [1967]

Observation: The Heisei series is painful to watch, and Hedorah is rather boring, even if it is kooky.

^it's just kinda funny how our tastes in these movies change like the wind...

you just said MG74 decreased in enjoyment for you...the last time I watched it, I liked it SO MUCH. I was absolutely diggin' the crap out of it. Literally the only thing I didn't like the last time I watched it was that the song goes into a second verse. TOTALLY unnecessary.

I tend to group the movies when I rank them too. Some of them are just so hard to differentiate. For the most part I just based it on just how much playtime each movie gets on my system.

After thinking a bit, here's my best shot:

Best of the Best
1.) Godzilla (1954)
2.) Mothra vs Godzilla
3.) Godzilla 1985
4.) Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster
5.) Godzilla vs Gigan
6.) Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1974)
7.) Godzilla vs Biollante
8.) Godzilla vs The Sea Monster

^Those are pretty much set in stone. These are the movies I always gravitate toward when I'm ready for my Godzilla fix. Hell I'm pretty sure I've watched at least one of the above list at least once a month since I was 5 years old.

Good, depending on mood
9.) GMK (I love this one just to clarify, it just doesn't have the nostalgic advantage the upper group has. At least not yet)
10.) Godzilla vs Hedorah (Gets a lot of hate from some people, but I've always enjoyed it.)
11.) King Kong vs Godzilla (Has really worked its way up the list once I finally saw the vastly superior Japanese version. I'm not normally a snob for the Japanese versions, but WOW does it make a difference here)
12.) Terror of Mechagodzilla
13.) Son of Godzilla
14.) Monster Zero (I know this is low, but I've just never gravitated to this movie like others have)
15.) Godzilla: Tokyo SOS
16.) Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002)

^ I like all of these too, but I just don't watch them nearly as much as the first group.

Love portions, but find the movies as a whole weak
17.) Godzilla 2000 (That middle portion where Godzilla disappears murders my interest every time.)
18.) Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1993) (The message is really quite stupid, even if I love the Godzilla/Rodan fight in the beginning and the musical score)
19.) Godzilla vs Destoroyah (SOOOOO much wasted potential, but when the movie works, MAN does it work)
20.) Destroy All Monsters (Ridiculously overrated. Pacing is off and more times than not I find my attention drifting until the awesome final battle)
21.) Godzilla's Revenge (A lot of people hate it, but if you think of it as a children's movie and not a monster movie, it's really quite good, just not a great monster movie)

Bad movies all around with the occasional flash of brilliance
22.) Godzilla vs King Ghidorah (The effects are nice, but nothing in fiction makes me crazier than a poorly constructed time travel plot and I can't look past it here)
23.) Godzilla Raids Again (It starts off well, but that climax has pacing that is just ridiculously awful)
24.) Godzilla vs Megaguirus (Has no idea what mood its trying for. While I enjoy a good "Ahab" story with Godzilla, the same story was done better in GXMG)

Atrocious

These are moves so bad, that when I do my annual run through of the whole series, I have to literally FORCE myself to watch them.

25.) Godzilla vs Megalon (Just too over the top goofy for my tastes. When I do watch it, I watch my MST3K version)
26.) Godzilla Final Wars (Whole thing feels like a mockery of the series moreso than a homage, as some people claim)
27.) Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla (Ughhhhhh, I hate this freaking movie so much. Just awful)
28.) Godzilla vs Mothra (1992) (Might surprise some people, but I hate every character, line of dialogue, special effect, plot point, and moment of this insipid pile of celluloid. I would ALMOST rather watch the 98 movie. ALMOST)

Worst by default
29.) Godzilla (1998)

I tried to be as objective as possible about this, and I wanted to get a ranking done before the new movie comes out.

TOP TIER, THESE NEVER CHANGE
1. Godzilla, King of the Monsters (1954)
2. Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964)
3. Monster Zero (1965)

ALMOST AS GOOD, BUT NOT PERFECT
4. Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989)
5. Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack (2001)
6. Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla (1974)
7. Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971)

The interesting thing about these is that GMK is higher than it has been in YEARS. Biollante moved up, but I think if I went on gut instinct and favoritism vs. MechaG and Hedorah would outrank them.

GREAT
8. Godzilla 1984 (1984)
9. King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962)
10. Godzilla 2000 (1999)
11. Son of Godzilla (1967)
12. Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972)

Godzilla 84 never gets this high up when I just do favorites, but man, every time I watch it, I really, really like it.
Sea Monster, STAGGERINGLY, has fallen. It and Son of Godzilla are usually interchangeable, but something about it just didn't quite work.
I don't know what it was. I'm just more impressed with Son of Godzilla on a technical level, and Godzilla vs. Gigan is too fun.

GOOD
14. Godzilla X MechaGodzilla (2002)
15. Godzilla X Mothra X MechaGodzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003)
16. Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)

The only surprising thing here is that my favoritism didn't allow Raids Again to rise to the top. XD
Oh, and for whatever reason GXMG rose up to 14th place. Usually I love GMMG more, and I still do
I suppose. After careful viewings of botht eh Kiryu films I find GXMG to be a more satisfying film.
It still suffers in the way a lot of Tezuka films do, but it has his strongest cast and a really cool
update for a classic foe.

Godzilla 2000 would be next but everything else I'm pretty apathetic on. These 10 though, I will continue to upgrade and buy every single new release in whatever new format they're available in. Too lazy to finish the list but the Top 10 are the most important anyways.

I tend to judge films by either how well made they are like most...but i also love films for how they entertain me. In some cases i'll rank a not so well made film above a well made one because of how much entertainment i get out of it. So here is my list:

My all time favorites I could watch no matter what.

1. Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla (1993)- I catch alot of looks for this one being my favorite, but i just get so much entertainment out of it that i can't help it. Its not very well made compared to most but i could watch this again and again and not get bored.
2. Godzilla vs the Sea Monster - my first Godzilla movie and still a big favorite of mine.
3. Godzilla (1954)
4. Ghidrah: the three headed monster
5. Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla (1974)

Darn good ones that I could watch anytime but not above my top 5.

6. Godzilla (2014)- this could change, only time will tell
7. GMK
8. Godzilla (1984)
9. Godzilla vs Biollante
10. Mothra vs Godzilla (1964)

Fun films in there own right that i re-watch time to time.

It basically asks you "This movie vs. This movie" and you pick, and after like 100 permutations it spits out your list. I'm stuck on "Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla or Godzilla x Megaguirus" but you guys can check it out and see how well it matches up with your lists.
