Just reading the Empire article now...some pieces I really liked reading:
-The cave scene is a built set. I love this approach. Not a fan of CGI sets.
-The setting is actually stated to be "largely Japan". Interesting for sure.
-1954, 1999, and present day are the confirmed years of import.
-No cameos from Toho foes (puts that argument to bed, one would think).
-Godzilla's face will be expressive. Not comically so, but enogh to be able to read a small range of emotions and know he's more than JUST a beast.
-The fighting will be very tooth-and-nail, and seems like it will be unlike many/any of the brawls we've seen thus far...evoking perhaps a bit more of the GRA intensity and certainly nearly none of the Heisei-era sumo matches.
-There will be at least one monster attack scene filmed from an almost locked human perspective. (sounds like it will give a true sense of the SCALE here...and sounds extremely tense).
-My distaste for Roland Emmerich seems more founded than ever, as he basically admits that every idea he had for the film was a middle-finger to Toho and an attempt to convince them he SHOULDN'T make the movie.

Even in trailer, Godzilla's roar makes his neck expand..it's going be interesting to see how expressive the CGI will be.

^You come across a good number of cybernetic cycloptic space chickens in your day to day life? (I refer of course to Gigan, who is among the most iconic of the supporting [ie never receiving their own solo film] Toho cast of creatures).

The puzzling thing to me about the muto design is that it doesn't look like it could dig efficiently.
Those long arms would get in the way.
The head from the subway attack with its albino skin would make sense for a subterranean creature.

Yeah, I can definitely see a PacRim comparison for the design approach, but I also think it's going to be QUITE A BIT more detailed than the toy. Just take a look at the claw that comes down in the trailer. There's some texturing, some detail, a change to the luminescence...I'm not super worried about the lack of detail on a toy that's significantly smaller than a 20 oz bottle of Gatorade (seen in the background of one of the pics)

Interesting that the overall reaction to the Godzilla design has been pretty positive on the fan boards and social media, but the opposing creatures are getting roundly panned.

And no cameo for a TOHO favorite monster is kind of a slap in the face of die-hard fans. Not quite as bad as the G98 film, but still shows a disregard for the history of the TOHO era. There has to be some Ifukube music, though. Even the latest James Bond reboot Casino Royale had that familiar them in the final scene and it worked magnificently. The Godzilla theme is just as iconic. Let's see if Edwards is smart enough to use it.

I doubt any Ifukube music will be used. MAYBE in either the opening credits or closing, but that'd be as much as I'd be willing to guess at all.

But if Toho monsters and Ifukube music are prerequisites for your enjoyment, then I'd probably just stick with the Toho films...and make sure to avoid Gojira and Godzilla 1985, though...since the only Toho monster found therein is Godzilla, which is just an obvious slap in the face.

So are the Toho movies that only had brand new kaiju in them also a slap in the face? What about the many Toho movies that don't have any ifukube music?

So, can we just ignore mechaghidrah for the time being? It's clear that he's going to continue to be an ignorant fanboy.

I'm about as die hard a fan as one can get. I love suitmation. I have two and a half shelves worth of Godzilla and kaiju related toys. Two DVD shelves worth of Godzilla and kaiju and tokusatsu cinema in general. I went and got me a second copy of Godzilla vs Megalon JUST TO GET ME THE EXTRAS.

My brother self appointed himself the damn nickname Minya since he was "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" 8 and friggin loves it.

(._. ) Are you more hardcore than that Mechaghidrah?

The only thing I don't have is the male power trip a lot of kids nowadays have calling Godzilla T H E K I N G.

I am a hardcore fan as about as anyone else here (because who else would go here?). I know all the actors, am interested in the directors other films (I think Jun Fukuda's Ironfinger films and ESPY were a lot better than most of his 70s Godzilla entries).

And not one moment have I felt not using previous Toho kaiju is a slap to the face. Or not using Akira Ifukube's music in this movie would be an insult. To be quite frank, whatever score Akira Ifukube could come up with for vs The Sea Monster, Son of Godzilla, Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla, or Return Of Godzilla, vs Biollante would never be anywhere near as good as the scores that were produced for those films.

Often times when a new foe for Godzilla was made it was a reflection of what was popular at the time, or an issue. Gigan and Megalon are closer to Giant Hero type enemies. Mechagodzilla (Showa) was right in the middle of the Super Robot boom. This new Muto looks more Japanese than I expected. As I said before, its closer to an anime styled giant creature and Ultraman Belial than a lot of Western styled creatures.

Half of the Roger Moore Bond films didn't use John Barry as composer. Does that make it any less James Bond?
