I wonder how the speech bubbles will add to (or detract from) the viewing experience. Color me curious!

I really don't mean to rain on anyone's parade but for me personally, if I never see Gigan again, I'll probably be just fine. I mean, I've got the Sony disc (thought about eBaying it at one point), and I'll hold onto it for completeness' sake. But, c'mon - it's not only the nadir of the Godzilla series, but made at a time when the entire Japanese film industry was holding on by the skin of it's teeth.

Hedorah is better, if for no other reason that it's so... weird. And I genuinely like Sea Monster. But Gigan? Pffffttttt! For me, even Megalon is better (barely...).

I couldn't disagree more, I love Godzilla vs. Gigan. It takes its budget-related limitations and makes it work. One of the most fun and likable groups of characters in the series, a plot that's just fun and wacky enough, stock Ifukube music used to great effect, an awesome new villain in Gigan that has both personality and one of the coolest designs I've seen on any monster in cinema period. Even the stock footage is used well enough to flow naturally and doesn't take me out of the movie even if it doesn't match 100% everywhere.

To me, it's easily a top 10 Godzilla movie. But of course we all have our preferences. ;)

I've come to appreciate Gigan to the point where it's my favorite '70s Godzilla film. On a purely technical level you could argue it's ahead of only Megalon when you consider the five films made in the decase... but, something about about the film works more. The plot is totally silly, it's cheap, stock footage and stock music galore, but it's the most fun. The human characters are tremendous fun and that's so important because kaiju stuff only makes up a quarter or a third of these movies, and the monsters have tons personality, too (Godzilla and Angilas bromance!).

Also, despite the low budget it has a great, unifying visual style; aping the popular manga visuals of the time.

The unique visual style thing was kind of a big deal in the '70s, what with Hedorah's psychedelia and Mechagodzilla looking very much like '70s spy/gangster movie except with monsters.

I love and hate Gigan all at the same time. It is a fun movie, but the stock footage from the monster battles really pulls me out of the immersion of the film. Add on top poor effects like the hand driving Anguirus into Gigan's blades and I'm not a fan of the characters. However, Gigan is just wicked awesome, the music is good, and the last half hour of the movie is pretty much non=stop monster footage.

Can't this discussion just make it's way to the talkback thread?

Okay, I feel dumb asking, but I've pre-ordered everything except Sea Monster. I can't seem to find it on Amazon (just the Sony disc).

Can someone link me?

I can't say that I'm that interested in these releases, I'm still not sure if I'll pick these up or not. I certainly appreciate that Section23 has at least looked into the extra dubs, but it doesn't look like there is that much incentive to upgrade from my Sony discs. Aside from new subtitle scripts, trailers, and a possible upgrade in picture quality (which is debatable) these discs don't offer me anything that I don't already have.

I'd certainly like to be supportive of Section23's efforts, but I might end up voting with my wallet on these releases. I don't like that Toho is so adverse, or difficult to deal with, when it comes to allowing companies to include extra features, namely the extra dubs. Considering that Echo Bridge's Biollante Blu-ray contains several extra features and is nearly half the price of any one of these upcoming releases, its just hard for me to justify double-dipping for any of these.

^companies don't even really do it for other franchises...I hear the latest Rocky collection is pretty barebones.

Pacific Rim grossed WELL over $79 million in the US alone. If you're predicting Godzilla will gross less than Pacific Rim, I hope you're not betting any money on that prediction, or even an "I'll eat my hat". Unless of course you have a particularly tasty hat lying around...
