I actually think that this type of marketing will become more and more common as time goes on.
The internet has changed things a lot- people are interested in instant gratification. Long waits and hype can quickly turn toxic.
As long as they beat the drum hard--- and I'm thinking that they will-- you'll be hearing about this film a TON before it comes out, and probably a lot DURING it's initial run.
