Remember when it used to be six or seven months on average between a movie's theatrical release date and the time when it came out on home video? In 2004 there seemed to be an industry-wide shift toward a four-month turnaround, sometimes even less than that, and it's been that way ever since. The first time I recall thinking "wow, that was quick" was for Ang Lee's Hulk in 2003, although X2 still took just short of seven months to hit DVD that same year.

I wonder what the reason for the change was. It did seem to coincide with the death of the VHS format, if that means anything.

I remember when, if a movie was successful, it would take FOREVER. I think Jurassic Park took over a year to hit VHS for the first time...

Some weren't even available for sale on their release date, only on a rental basis. Purchasing them would not happen until months later.

I remember being able to rent Godzilla 2000 on VHS months before it became available for sale. I remember it started with a commercial for the Heisei series videos and I was disappointed when my copy didn't have that.

I'm trying to remember if Godzilla 2000 was the first Godzilla movie that I only ever owned on DVD...(as opposed to upgrading from a VHS to a DVD later on)

G2000 was the movie that convinced me to buy my first DVD player because it wasn't available on VHS.

I forget what my first movie on DVD was Pirates of the Caribbean maybe? Anyways did anyone actually watch 47 Ronin in theaters? I have yet to meet anyone that has and I have friends that will watch ANYTHING. I feel like this movie was only in theaters for its opening weekend and then was quickly hidden out of view.
