I dont even understand why there is a question about this. The article on SFJ clearly states that TOHO made new HD telecines. A telecine is made when the actual 35mm film is run through a telecine machine and recorded to some sort of video format (typically some sort of digital video file these days). If they made new HD telecines then they ran 35mm film through an HD telecine machine that output an HD video master that can then be used for HDTV broadcast, printing blurays, or downscaled for SDTV broadcast or printing DVDs. Saying they're made from dvd upscales doesn't even make technical sense. Nobody uses regular DVDs as a video source for television broadcasting or especially as a master source for printing new media (dvd or bluray). IF they WERE upscales (which they're not) they wouldn't be DVD upscales. They would be HD upscales from an SD video master. BUT THEYRE NOT. TOHO MADE NEW HD VIDEO MASTERS DIRECTLY FROM THE FILM SOURCES IN THEIR ARCHIVES.

Anyway, to try and get this thread back on topic, I'm very curious to see how these new blurays stack up in a direct comparison to the previous Sony DVDs. As others have said, Sony did a bang up job on their remasters while TOHO did a marginal job with their HD masters. Even so, I'm betting the blurays will still be an improvement. The question is just how much of an improvement? I'll be buying the blurays for sure, but i might still hang on to my Sony dvds.

Judging by Toho's track record, I think their HD transfers will have much more visual information and detail while Sony's old DVD masters will have better color and contrast in comparison.

Still excited, though! Real excited!

I'd like to add one more piece to my points above. details the restoration work done. "Step 2" specifically talks about, and even breifly explains how the NEW HD Telecine was made DIRECTLY FROM THE FILM ELEMENTS.

Ok, I'm done with this conversation for real this time.

So I may or may not have made this out of disappointment of Kraken's (in my opinion) crappy Blu-ray covers.

May expand it into a full cover. Who knows!

^I don't see it that way. These titles have name recognition, especially with people who saw these films as kids and don't Google Godzilla movies to match up the alternate titles to their memories. Quite frankly, any future US release of 'Ebirah, Horror of the Deep' for the conceivable future would be wise to have 'Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster' on the box somewhere.

Actually...after looking at the covers a little more, they are very ugly and bootleg looking. The taglines should be on the back if they think they need to include them...and that dark green text doesn't go well with an already dark background. Just saying... Its not gonna stop me from buying them. Wish they would just do what Media Blasters did and use the Japanese posters with English text on them.

Even if you're kidding, you should both just get over it and stop with the name calling. It's not funny and you're wasting people's time and bandwidth for nothing.

As to the covers that you are arguing about. Can I ask you if you know what this means?

^ My apologies, it won't happen again.

Regardless of my feelings toward design and bonus content, etc., I think anything Godzilla on Blu-ray is enough of an incentive for me to buy. Really looking forward to these! Excited that the flurry of releases/re-releases is finally starting.

Is it unreasonable to hope that, when Sony's rights lapsed, they handed their masters (probably HD-D5 tapes, Tyler) over to Toho, and that's what Toho gave Kraken? Who among us can tell?

"Not Final" means that those covers are just mock-ups, and not the final product.
They could change the design before the release, thus the "Not Final" designation.

Thought the covers are actually pretty good IMO, and it's nice that they have both versions of the movie titles (like Godzilla vs. The Smog Monster/Godzilla vs. Hedorah for example).

I figure "Not Final" means "these were submitted to Toho and are currently awaiting approval before its official"...
