Likely, they can't have their precious vampires loose to Godzilla.

Honestly, the worst part about this is some people are going to panic and think this means Godzilla will somehow lose to Vampire Academy at the box office, even though they come out MONTHS apart from each other.

Not when you figure the International Market in. It did more than 300 in all the markets and not only that it was number 1 film in the world for several weeks.

If this film can recoup ALL of it's production & marketing budget from stateside release numbers alone then we can be about 99% certain that there will be a sequel. However, if the suits are forced to add international BO numbers to the total just to break even then ...not so much. We need a US box office return that at least equals the production budget or this will be considered a flop, at least commercially.

As much as people love Godzilla, they also love to smell blood in the water, and many are salivating at the chance to scream "I told you so" to those who thought it would be a good idea to attempt another American G-film. There are already idiots out there predicting total failure for this, yet the film is still four months out!?! I don't get how these twits get any attention. It's total figures manipulation and soap box ballyhoo in an attempt to sway the sheeple-ish fence-sitters. These knowledgeable "Hollywood insider" types have about as much street cred as Criswell, IMHO.

For executives to feel "safe" about a property or potential franchise, it needs to clear its initial investment solely on US box office take alone. When you start having to fluff poor domestic performance by layering in revenue from foreign ticket sales it then becomes a case of arguing the point, based on projections and predictions. Depending on who will be holding the purse strings for any possible sequel, they may not feel safe about investing money into something that probably won't turn a profit until the planet-wide recipts have all been counted up. That's a pretty scary place to be from a financial standpoint, especially when you're talking capital investment north of $150 - $200 million. Movies are inherently a crapshoot anyhow, and when the odds start going way down not too many peple in their right minds will feel inclined to casually throw the dice again.
