Give me ET now?

Stop worrying about the box office with this movie. It made the rounds of press when the trailer came out. LATimes/New York News papers/MTV News. If the movie bombs despite how good it may be, it is because people outside our fan base don't give a "OH GODZILLA! WHAT TERRIBLE LANGUAGE!" and no matter how much advertising they do will not help. If the movie cost $160 to make and it makes Pacific Rim money it will be fine. Pacific Rim in my opinion shows the amount of hardcore monster fans are out there. I think there are enough people out there that remember creature double feature and will go see it out of nostalgia that aren't hard core fans.

True, I think people are underestimating Godzilla's star power. The baby boomers who grew up watching him on TV aren't dead...yet, and us, largely the children of the Baby Boomers have a strong love of the character. Sure Godzilla might not have the same cultural awareness as he did in the 90s, but people still know the -zilla suffix means large and powerful.

I'd say there's a balancing act for sure...on the one hand, I think Godzilla is a recognizable name, on the other it has yet to be proven to be a box office winning name.

But Legendary/WB are doing enough in terms of marketing right now. There's a trailer, there's some news, people are aware of it, but they aren't PUSHING it right now, nor should they. Spider-man and X-Men aren't exactly getting tons of run right now. There's still PLENTY of time.

Even 16 years later, GINO is an epochal moment in the history of the summer blockbuster. It was proof that a picture could have so much going for it (A-List director, huge campaign, big budget, Worldwide Brand character)…yet still fail because of poor quality.

The fandom, the media, general audiences know that a big-budget Hollywood Godzilla movie should be a slam dunk – it just hasn't happened yet. Here's hoping it does May 16.

GINO basically killed that kind of advertising.

I mean, I know modern-day internet is a HUGE cause of leaks and all that stuff, but I can only think of one film to date that has attempted the GINO ad approach since then, and it's Cloverfield...and Cloverfield wasn't intended to be a tentpole film by any means.

I think they have the right idea with the advertising, so far. As a previous poster stated, a big budget, well done Godzilla movie should be a no brainer for success. He's a giant fire breathing indestructible dinosaur (read: kid appeal) with 60 years of history and the awareness of the character among people over 30 is very high. Id even say that among those 30+ that the general consensus would be fond remembrance, for whatever reason.

This slow ramp up is having it's affect, with the viral leaks of toys, spoilers etc. only adding to the fire. Lets face it, the 1st trailer was met widely with a positive reception. It did what it was intended to do...leave people hungry for more.

Now we are just at that point where everyone is asking "where is my more!?" Thats exactly where I would want the hardcore fanbase to be at this point were I a WB exec. Bitching and complaining, venting pent up excitement on the internet and in their everyday lives, raising even more awareness of the film. I think the next month will show us the beginnings of the gradual ramp up to a more intensive advertising/publicity campaign. We have an interview with Cranston coming later today, and I hope/predict it's just the opening shot of a more robust publicity campaign coming to fruition.

Godzilla's winning its first round in this very interesting MTV competition:

http://www.mtv.com/content/movies/movie_brawl/

It's pretty much kicking Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' ass. I say interesting though because of how these polls are looking:

Noah beating Transformers 4. Sils Maria clobbering Spider-Man 2. The Rover stomping Captain America 2. Veronica Mars annihilating Guardians of the Galaxy.

I hadn't even heard of Sils Maria and The Rover until today. And I suppose I should've expected Veronica Mars to be doing well considering the fan following it has.

Wouldn't be surprised if the poll's being vote-brigaded by people who are tired of Superhero films getting such huge amounts of buzz. Maybe 4chan or something. In any case, Godzilla has a pretty rabid fanbase, so we can probably propel the Big G pretty far if we keep tabs on this thing.

The only tidbit worth pondering over is he said they build tension like Jaws. (not showing the beast)
