In my opinion, we live in a great age of cinema.. Thanks to movies like TDK trilogy and Man of Steel, characters that have long been around are getting revamped and appealing to a much larger audience. Their new stories are both fresh and yet reminiscent of renditions past.

Thats why I get excited about this. Godzilla is on his way to becoming part of this new generation of films. Films which not only shatter box office records, but also imprint such a mark on casual movie fans that they see the movie multiple times, and fall in love with characters that they once deemed boring/campy/lame.

I'm old enough now to have seen this come to play. I had a conversation with a coworker recently about Batman. He had no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned my favorite part of one of the older movies was when Arnold played Mr. Freeze. And yet he knew everything about TDK.

In the end, I don't believe this will do okay. It won't be just another retelling with horrid rewatchability. This thing is going to be huge.

Well to start off with, I first want to introduce myself, though those who are also in TK might know me already. I'm JGAR :D , and this is my first time (and comment) here in SciFi Japan. I joined because I'm a huge fan of Godzilla and of other kaiju movies, so I wanted to join communities based around those 2 elements, make friends, discuss about stuff, and whatnot. On topic, I really am looking forward to this film, and want it to be a success as much as you wish for. The movie could very well be the movie that is going to blast Godzilla into popularity, and I'm not taking popularity as in "a worldwide icon" (which he is already), but I'm talking the type of popularity that pushes this franchise and character into buzzing, establishing brands, a bigger fan base, and overall bring it into one of the most successful and popular franchises world wide.

That being said, there are some conflicting situations when it comes if this will really do well at the box office to guarantee the resurrection of the Godzilla franchise, brand, and even character. It's really do or die, because either A), this film will become successful enough to revive the franchise and take it to a whole new level :) , or B), this film underperforms and the franchise is left for dead, maybe forever to a certain point :( . On the good side, we can safely say the film will be great, otherwise why would an Oscar Winner like Juliette Binoche or the great Bryan Cranston himself star in a Godzilla movie? Then there's the advantages over Pacific Rim, like Godzilla being both a known franchise and a recognizable household name, which is already a bigger success than that film. To be honest this film also has a bit more known and talented cast, and the trailer as well got more positive feedback than the trailers for Pacific Rim.

Now on the bad side, nearly ALL of Warner Bros.'s decisions and treatments, lets start with the release date. A mid May release is not exactly a bad choice, but when this was first put to that release date, it was put AGAINST Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, one week before Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (now X-Men: Days Of The Future Past , and still 2 weeks before The Amazing Spiderman 2 . Why waste your biggest 2014 movie against THE biggest 2014 movies (referring to TASM 2 and X-Men: Days Of The Future Past) instead of say, Edge Of Tomorrow? It's like Warner Bros. is treating their other films well but treats Godzilla as a competition film (which seems to be according to its release date)? Then there's the marketing, advertising your film 5 months is not exactly a bad idea, but for a film like this, and a film that is sandwiched between 2 mega comic book blockbuster, IT IS. Why did you give Interstellar a Teaser Trailer last month but not Godzilla last summer?

BTW, did anyone catch any kind of interesting audience reaction to the trailer during The Hobbit in theaters? Like certain trailers just resonates better with the audience than others. Did Godzilla have any effect at your theater?

My theater had a couple excited groups of young people. Maybe high school or college age. Most others in the theater seemed indifferent though. Similar to the reactions I saw for Pacific Rim's trailer.

The Godzilla trailer itself didn't really show Godzilla that much, so indifference is expected. The Pacific Rim indifference is more sad since the footage in the trailer was really exciting. The Godzilla one looks more like a setup for the big action packed segments.

Indifference is the typical reaction to ANY trailer. I wouldn't make anything of it. Outright derision (like the time I laughed out loud at a Final Destination trailer) is more of an issue.

Looks very different than the light & sound toy. Like this one better. Very powerfully built.

Pretty sure the overbite is a result of this toy having a posable jaw.

... are we completely sure Godzilla is CGI? This really looks like a guy in a suit to me.

I remember a rumor going around saying Legendary was contractually obligated to shoot a scene with suitmation. LOL

That toy doesn't even come close to the Godzilla in the movie. That's why it is a prototype. His spines are so much bigger in the trailer.

Love the toy.

I wish I could see more of the spines but what I like most of all is that Godzilla is well-proportioned. The feet look fine, and it's definitely Godzilla.

Not a big fan of the feet. The head doesn't look as small as I thought so that's good. The feet are too stumpy and not reptilian.
