Honestly, to me, that would go ESPECIALLY for a movie trailer.

Nobody, but NOBODY is ever talking about the movie trailer commercial from the Super Bowl...they're always discussing the monkey who threw his banana at a sword fish who turned it into coins that a baby seal ate and spat as some fat ginger guy, or the totally normal thing played up as SUPER racy that some moderately hot chick was doing.

In all my years of watching football and especially the Super Bowl, I cannot remember a single significant movie trailer, while I can call to mind at least half a dozen beer commercials, a bunch of pepsi and coke stuff, and then the random one-off things like the Honda commercial where the kid is dressed up like Vader or the Betty White Snickers commercial or the office linebacker.

In this increasingly computer/internet-driven age, I would expect to see less & less advertising being put up on the Superbowl. Especially when you consider that most of them go viral within hours of being on-air why would anyone want to pay such outrageous $1mil per/15sec fees? (or whatever the going rate is for Superbowl advertising). Viral marketing seems to be the wave of the future. Besides, no ad running during the Superbowl means at least $1million less thay'll need to score at the box office to break even and green light a sequel. :-D

I honestly wouldn't expect a big TV marketing campaign push until mid-March / beginning of April.

if the rumors about the $90mill budget are true, I expect to see Edwards get a ton of work in the future...what LITTLE of the film we've seen in the trailers looks STUNNING, and to be able to bring in something of such fine quality for such a small amount of money practically guarantees more work for the guy.

Imagine if you're a studio and Stephen Sommers says he wants to make a movie with a $190 million budget, and Gareth Edwards says he can make it for HALF.

Even if the budget is more in that $150-160 mill range...that's still a solid $10-30 mill less than the typical huge blockbuster movie of this kind...

I don't know why they would be secretive about Edwards saving money. My only guess is that people would panic thinking it would be all dialogue and no Godzilla and they would want to avoid that. Still, one of the best looking movies I have seen is Hellboy 1 and 2 and they didn't cost more than $125 million between the both of them. Which surprised me when I found out how much Pacific Rim cost.

If I had to guess how he saved those numbers it would have to do with the minimal green screen photography. If the post production crew has natural lighting, coloring and props it makes them easier to fill in the blanks.

When they talk about how much a movie cost, does that include what they have to pay the actors up front? Cause I can't imagine any of these actors in Godzilla would pull Smith/Tom Cruise numbers. (which can be $20 million a pop sometimes)

I just noticed something very interesting (which for some reason never really gave it much thought until now) while looking at Ricardo Delgado's Godzilla sketch for Jan Dupont's aborted Godzilla film back in 1994.

Image

If you notice, as Godzilla places his left foot on the ground to walk (or run in this case), his feet become stumpy. This actually makes sense to me that a creature of such immense size and weight (like an elephant), would need to have such feet in order to support itself. I'm no zoologist, but to me this is more realistic and makes more sense than having oversized feet. Sure it looks cool on film, and I myself love the giant feet that Godzilla has, but since Legendary Godzilla is supposed to be as realistic as possible, the stumpy feet makes more sense. :)

That's because in that sketch Godzilla's toes are gripping the ground since he's running. His actual foot is still larger.

It's interesting to compare the Delgado Godzilla to the Legendary Godzilla.

The Delgado takes the features of a very traditional Godzilla, a mix between the '54 and Heisei, and just molds those exact features into the shape of a more scientifically accurate dinosaur: swift, bird-like feet, tail parallel to the ground.

Legendary takes the opposite route and bases their Godzilla on the stance, shape, mass of the traditional Godzilla and then plays around with influences original and traditional to create a face that looks like Godzilla, but with a strong resemblance to no one design of the past in particular; dorsal plates that look like Godzilla's, but like no particular past Godzilla's dorsal plates, ect. ect.

The details of the Delgado Godzilla make it look like Godzilla, while Legendary's has Godzilla's distinctive silhouette.

That's this Godzilla right?

I've gotta say that I like that design, and I think it would have been great in G98, but I also really love what I've seen from his new design.

I find it rather agitating that the new story saying that Godzilla's going to flop is spreading around the Internet like freaking wildfire.

I for one am glad the '98 Godzilla looks nothing like Godzilla. Makes it easier to dismiss that sh*t sandwich. Also, DeBont's Godzilla film would have still sucked.
