I saw the special at the movie theater simulcast last night. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I agree that I really wish they could've gotten Eccleston to come back but that's really the only "complaint" I had. I'm not caught up on the series (I'm in the middle of the first Matt Smith season) so I had to do a little googling to figure out how exactly the war doctor fit into the timeline. I also figured out what the heck that little webisode thing was about - it had left me scratching me head as I've not made it to the war doctor episode(s) and thus had no idea who he was and I've never seen the 90s movie. Baht thanks to Wikipedia I was able to figure out enough to follow along without completely spoiling everything I haven't seen yet.

Oh, and there were two intros before the show started. The first was a Sontaran educating the audience on proper theater etiquette and the other was Matt Smith and David Tennant introducing the show and telling you to put on your 3D glasses. Both were pretty hilarious. The Sontaran bit about popcorn had me cracking up.

So, I've been thinking about what you guys are saying regarding the War doctor and I have to disagree.

While I didn't really experience the build up to him yet since I'm not quite there in the series, I think it makes total sense for the other Doctors to look at him with all the loathing and disgust that they do. Even though what we saw might not exactly fit with our idea of a warrior, consider this: At the end of the special the 9th, 10th, and 11th Doctors ALL come away from the events with no memory of what really happened. As far as they know, the War Doctor really did destroy Gallifrey and kill the entire Timelord race, save for himself. He was a warrior in the most extreme form: annihilating everything and everyone involved in the war on both sides so as to ensure it was ended in the most finite possible way. He killed everyone. He was truly deserving of the title War Doctor, not because he fought in it, but because he ended it. It is only we the audience and the Eleventh Doctor, at this point 400 years later in his personal timeline, that finally knows the truth of what happened.

And the more I think about it, this all makes the War Doctor a fantastic character. I like what he says about himself at the end. He found a way to end the greatest war the universe has ever known and to do it it in such a way that he saves his people and his planet yet gets none of the credit. Even he himself won't know how extraordinary he was in that moment until 400 years and 3 regenerations later. He is truly deserving of the name "Doctor".

I'm not really arguing that he shouldn't lose the title, or that they shouldn't be disgusted with him...but that he chooses "warrior" claims to have "fought" in the time war when there doesn't seem to be any indication of that from the character as portrayed in the special. The War Doctor feels like he's tired of the war, but not that he's fought it...and when we see him actively participating he's just protesting the war and hitting a couple of Daleks with the Tardis. A lot of that could be time constraints, but it feels like the only thing he did in the time war was activate, or potentially activate the moment.

The impression I got from the 'Night of the Doctor' prequel was that Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor regenerated into a young John Hurt, and the very aged Hurt in 'Day' was the result of years upon years of fighting in the Time War.

I do wish they had shown us the War Doctor doing more actual fighting in the Time War.

According to an article on IGN that had an interview with Moffat Matt Smith is the 13th Doctor; John Hurt's doctor is cannon now and Tennat's Doctor used a regeneration in the series 4 fianle(s).

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/11/26/ ... fc13000046

As for the end of the 50th special I assumed it was Hurt regenerating into Eccelston hence why we didn't actually see what he regenerated into. I really do wish that Eccelston would have participated in the 50th, it would have been that much cooler if he was invovlved.

I suspect that like 60% of Moffat's plans with Doctor Who are made up entirely on the fly. I mean, that could be the easiest explanation, or even that SINCE the 8th died in the crash, taking that Goblet gave a new set of regenerations or ANY number of explanations.

I think that Moffat just really wants to use Matt Smith's swan song in the role to tackle the issue of what happens to the dying Doctor after he's already used up his twelve regenerations. If Moffat didn't count the War Doctor and hand-transfer regenerations as part of the total twelve, he wouldn't be able to tell this story until Peter Capaldi's successor was exiting the role.

Still have the incarnation from Scream of the Shalka to factor in... Plus the Valyard, and possibly SEVEN to EIGHT more incarnations (shown in the Mindbending game in Brain of Morbius)

The Doctor has also been quoted as saying Timelords have 90 lives and that he himself has gone through 120.

It gets a bit weird looking toward the end, but man would I ever love at least one crossover special.

It airs at 9:00pm EST on BBC America but it already aired in the UK earlier today. It's an amazing episode, the perfect send-off for Matt Smith's incarnation of the Doctor and a spectacular culmination of everything that's transpired during his tenure. Simply magnificent!

Awesome special but is there a date yet for his first episode? I hope they don't make use wait until Sept again as S7 clearly showed (at least to me) that a Sept-April run lacks any energy and effort when it comes to writing.
